Disturbance characteristics and forest properties regulate surface warming and recovery across Europe
|
Abstract Disturbances that disrupt the structure, composition or functioning of forest ecosystems are increasing in frequency and severity across Europe due to climate change and land-use pressures. Yet their effects on local surface climate remain poorly quantified. Here we combine Landsat-derived summer land-surface temperature estimates with a Europe-wide disturbance record to assess how disturbance attributes and forest properties shape post-disturbance warming and thermal recovery.

KE YU | Mastering maths needs more than making it ‘interesting’
When the 2025 matric results were released, the headlines told a familiar story: South African learners continue to struggle with mathematics. The mathematics pass rate dropped to 64%, down from 69.1% in 2024, despite a record 88% overall national pass rate. Only 34% of the 901,790 candidates took mathematics and maths distinctions fell sharply. Some learners who did well in earlier grades find themselves failing it a few years later, frustrated and demoralised.

Microbially-mediated halogenation and dehalogenation cycling of organohalides in the ocean - Nature Communications
Abstract Microbially mediated organohalide cycling in the ocean has profound implications for global biogeochemical cycles and climate, but the geographic distribution and diversity of the halogenation-dehalogenation cycling microorganisms remain unknown. Here, we constructed an organohalide-cycling gene database (HaloCycDB) to explore the global atlas of halogenation-dehalogenation cycling microorganisms and genes from 1473 marine metagenomes.
Global Dynamics of a Toxin Producing Phytoplankton-Zooplankton System in an Advective Environment
In this paper, we mainly focus on global dynamics of a toxin producing phytoplankton–zooplankton system in an advective environment. We first investigate the well-posedness of solution. Then, we investigate properties of semitrivial steady state. And by studying the influence of the diffusive rates d 1 $$ {d}_1 $$ and d 2 $$ {d}_2 $$ on q 0 $$ {q}_0 $$ , we obtain stability of the semitrivial steady state. We also prove the existence and uniqueness of positive steady state by bifurcation theory.

Integrative Dissection of Lignin Composition in Tartary Buckwheat Seed Hulls for Enhanced Dehulling Efficiency (Adv. Sci. 20/2024)
Graphical Abstract Tartary Buckwheat Seed Hulls Tartary buckwheat is known for its high nutritional value, yet its tough seed hull necessitates a laborious dehulling process. In article number 2400916, Qiao Zhao, Zhaoxia Sun, Xuebin Zhang, and co-workers report a S-depleted lignin composition of the seed hull, which could contribute to its rigidity, along with identifying the genetic basis controlling this unique lignin chemotype.
Are Chinese better at maths than the rest of us?
Maths is crucial for learners’ success beyond the school level but, for many, learning and achieving in the subject is a struggle. And the general opinion is that Chinese are good at maths. Seeing maths as a difficult subject is not a contemporary phenomenon. In ancient Greece and Egypt, it was confined to higher learning institutions. In the 18th century, maths was offered at the senior level of secondary schools and vocational training but only for upper social strata.

Microbe-associated molecular pattern recognition receptors have little effect on endophytic Arabidopsis thaliana microbiome assembly in the field
1 Introduction Plants closely associate with complex microbial communities composed of bacteria, fungi, oomycetes, and other microorganisms. This community, or microbiome, colonizes the soil surrounding the roots (rhizosphere), external plant surfaces, and the spaces within plants (endosphere). The microbiome affects plant growth (Vessey, 2003), phenology (Lau and Lennon, 2011; Wagner et al., 2014), abiotic stress tolerance (Rodriguez et al., 2008) and disease resistance (Vannier et al., 2019).

Navigating the AI challenge in education - banishing ChatGPT is not the answer
EMBRACING TECHNOLOGY OP-ED Deep suspicion of AI as a vehicle that can facilitate cheating in an educational setting has seen calls to banish the use of technology like ChatGPT in educational assessments. This approach will result in a disconnect between education and the real world it prepares students for. Instead, an integrative approach to teaching and assessment is possible.
Joint optimization of land carbon uptake and albedo can help achieve moderate instantaneous and long-term cooling effects - Communications Earth & Environment
|
Abstract Both carbon dioxide uptake and albedo of the land surface affect global climate. However, climate change mitigation by increasing carbon uptake can cause a warming trade-off by decreasing albedo, with most research focusing on afforestation and its interaction with snow. Here, we present carbon uptake and albedo observations from 176 globally distributed flux stations.

Beneficial microbes going underground of root immunity
Abstract Plant roots interact with an enormous diversity of commensal, mutualistic, and pathogenic microbes, which poses a big challenge to roots to distinguish beneficial microbes from harmful ones. Plants can effectively ward off pathogens following immune recognition of conserved microbe-associated molecular patterns (MAMPs). However, such immune elicitors are essentially not different from those of neutral and beneficial microbes that are abundantly present in the root microbiome.
