Robert Bartlett was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the town that would eventually be most strongly associated with him and with the success of neonatal extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). He went to medical school at the University of Michigan, and after graduating with honors, decided on a surgical residency at the Brigham and Children’s Hospitals in Boston. He then further specialized in thoracic surgery and entered academic medicine with an NIH post at Harvard.
