Back to School – It’s story time — CommPRO
In the coming weeks college students across America will return to campus. I will, too. This spring I will start my 25th semester as a faculty member at New York University’s School of Professional Studies. I’ve been proud to be a part of the school’s Integrated Marketing and Communications master’s program since 2013. I’m excited to be back on the campus I graduated from some time ago, but my enthusiasm is driven more by the opportunity to teach a class about storytelling.
When Boards Forget Who They Work For and Why Communicators Hold the Mirror — CommPRO
So, a director on a corporate board and the company’s chief communications officer (CCO) walk into a bar. “Boy, have I got a problem,” says the board member. “How can I help?” says the CCO. “It’s an agency problem,” he says. “Now wait a minute,” says the CCO. “You can’t tell me what to do with my agency!” Exasperated, the board member says, “What!?” And the CCO replies, “Don’t what me.
It’s Show Time for Communicators Living in a Show-Me Economy — CommPRO
Despite being the first to teach a university class in public relations, Ed Bernays — who many consider to be the father of modern-day PR — said he didn’t think public relations needed to be taught in the classroom. Rather, he thought the key skills required of a PR professional could be taught on the job, as long as other criteria like intellectual curiosity, having a broad worldview and being able to maintain confidentiality like a doctor or lawyer were already present. He was right.
5 steps for a values-driven response framework
Ken Kerrigan is a senior vice president at The Bliss Group and co-lead of the firm’s Professional Services practice. He has no professional connection to Perkins Coie. “It is patently unlawful, and we intend to challenge it.” With those words, issued in a brief statement to the media, the law firm Perkins Coie decided to literally “bet the firm” while defending its values and ability to operate.
Why Content Remains King
Over the past 20 years, more than 3,200 print newspapers were forced to shut their doors, and countless journalists have lost their jobs. If predictions hold true, by this time next year, we will have lost a third of the newspapers that were published in the U.S. in 2005. But most of you probably already knew that. The changing media landscape is a tired refrain. But it’s still a problem, especially if you have clients with something to say.
Why Did You Do That?
When I was in the second grade, my homeroom teacher, Mrs. Reilly, walked up to my desk one morning. I didn’t like the look on her face. In fact, I was downright terrified. Within seconds, she’d taken hold of my arm and was dragging me to the principal’s office—the dreaded Sister Loretta. They both looked very angry. Their anger was reasonable. The day before, one of the more popular kids in class, “Brian,” had told me he thought it would be fun if I punched one of our classmates in the stomach.
The Critical Role of People in an Ideas Economy
One hundred years ago, the first class in public relations was taught at New York University by Ed Bernays, the so-called “father of public relations” and nephew of the famed psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud. This year, I’ll begin my tenth year teaching communications at NYU with one simple sentence: “Communications is a behavioral science.” We don’t have any notes to prove it, but I suspect that Bernays—with a nod to Uncle Sigmund—may have started off his class with a similar comment.
All Rise: The Future of Big Law in an Era of Stakeholder Engagement
Analysis As we enter 2021, we should expect the needs of business and society to continue colliding. But if law firms prepare for those collisions, they can drive better outcomes. Credit: WISSANU/Shutterstock.com We’d all like to forget 2020, but it’s unlikely we will. And maybe that’s a good thing. Undoubtedly, we’ll remember it as the year of COVID-19, global protests calling for social justice and an unprecedented presidential election.
Truth on Trial: Consumer Activism Could Be the Big Legal Risk of 2021
Analysis But as we prepare to move into the new reality of a post-pandemic world, managing these intangibles must become a top priority, not only for a company’s communications advisers but for their legal teams, too, writes Law Firm Management columnist Ken Kerrigan.
