A binuclear copper enzyme platform for enantioconvergent radical (pseudo)halogenation
Abstract Despite their intriguing native metalloenzymology, naturally occurring copper enzymes remain underexploited for new-to-nature biocatalytic reactions. Here we report the systematic investigation and reprogramming of natural copper enzymes to catalyse unnatural free-radical (pseudo)halogenation reactions with high enantioselectivity.
Multicatalytic cooperativity enables divergent photobiocatalytic C–C couplings for scaffold diversification
Abstract Most new-to-nature enzymatic reactions have arisen from mechanism-guided design, whereas synthetically useful yet unanticipated enzymatic reactivity remains difficult to identify. Here we show that systematic interrogation of enzyme–photocatalyst pairings can reveal emergent reactivity inaccessible to either catalyst alone.
Structural mechanisms underlying resistance to Switch-II pocket inhibitors in KRAS
Abstract Direct targeting of KRAS through the Switch-II pocket is an effective therapeutic strategy, but acquired resistance limits clinical benefit. We examine clinically observed resistance mutations (R68S, H95Q, Y96C, Y96D and Q99L) arising during KRAS G12C inhibitor therapy using biochemical, structural, computational and cellular approaches. Covalent and noncovalent binding measurements reveal mutation- and inhibitor-specific reductions in drug engagement across inhibitor classes.
A quantum-resilience roadmap for Singapore banks
Singapore’s financial sector now has a clear destination: quantum resilience before the end of the decade. The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) has said it will set progressive timelines for financial institutions to map their cryptographic assets, decide what needs to move first, and build the skills and governance needed for a quantum-safe transition. Locking in the destination, however, is not the same as knowing how to get there.

Tracheostomy vs. Delayed Extubation in Head and Neck Reconstruction: A Meta-Analysis
1 Introduction Microvascular reconstruction is now widely recognized as the standard of care for large and complex head and neck oncologic defects post ablation [1]. These defects are a result of radical approaches including but not limited to mandibulotomy, pharyngotomy, and neck dissections. In these patients, reconstructions can include local, regional, or free tissue transfer depending on size, complexity, and patient factors surrounding the ablation.

Factors affecting the quality of postoperative rehabilitation in children with cochlear implants based on the theory of knowledge, attitude and practice
Discussion In this study, we aimed to collect data from both the children who underwent cochlear implant surgery and their parents’ levels of KAP regarding cochlear implants. Our findings indicate that parents’ KAP directly impacts the children’s postoperative rehabilitation. Although parental KAP scores varied according to child and family characteristics, parents generally demonstrated a solid understanding and positive attitude toward cochlear implants and appropriate practices.
Synthesis of dienes from pyrrolidines using skeletal modification - Nature Communications
Abstract Saturated N-heterocyclic pyrrolidines are common in natural products, medicinal compounds and agrochemicals. However, reconstruction of their skeletal structures creating new chemical space is a challenging task, and limited methods exist for this purpose. In this study, we report a skeletal modification strategy for conversion of polar cyclic pyrrolidines into nonpolar linear dienes through a N-atom removal and deconstruction process.

Are Medications Triggering Acute Angle Closure?
Clinical Update Download PDF How big a role do systemic medications play in tipping a patient’s anatomically narrow angles into acute angle-closure (AAC) glaucoma? Various medications are associated with the onset of an AAC crisis. But quantifying the risk of individual drugs remains challenging, even with recent retrospective studies on large, at-risk populations. Risks of Systemic Drugs Recent study flags problems.

In situ stiffness manipulation using elegant curved origami
INTRODUCTION The stiffness of a material or a structure is of key importance in most, if not all, applications, with positive stiffness as a common property for bearing loads and transferring motion (1), zero (or quasi-zero) stiffness for vibration isolation and protection (2), negative stiffness for fast switching between states (3), high-speed actuation (4–6), and programmed deformation (7).
What to Do If You Can't Pay Your Bills Because of Coronavirus
Right now, we're all facing financial uncertainty that we've likely never navigated before. If your family is rethinking your strategy for spending and saving money, or if you're suddenly facing debt or financial hardship you didn't anticipate, you're not alone. We do know people are looking for a plan forward for their finances. And as bills begin to pile up and as people begin to dip into their savings, families are looking for ways to avoid financial distress.
What I Learned Building Credit Karma Into a $7 Billion Business
When I first started Credit Karma in 2007, my co-founders and I received a lot of resistance from credit bureaus and investors and were faced with massive headwinds navigating the financial crisis in 2008. However, just two years after launch, we had given away our one millionth free credit score and secured our first round of VC funding. This wasn't easy, there were countless times when I thought we wouldn't make it.

Five Things Business Leaders Need to Understand About Millennials
We have all heard the stories about how millennials don't value money. They just hop from job-to-job and aren't interested in growing up, becoming homeowners or using credit cards. I'm not buying it and you shouldn't either. In June, the U.S. Census Bureau reported that the 75.4 million millennials in America (ages 18-34) officially outnumbered the 74.9 million Baby Boomers (ages 51-69).
How to Avoid the Dinner Party Gone Terribly Wrong Approach to Fast Growth
We have all been there. A group of friends wants to get together over dinner to catch up. As more people are invited, the challenge of setting a time and place gets exponentially more difficult. One person is vegan. Another has a serious wheat allergy. Four can meet on Friday, but two can only make weekends. Even once a date is on the calendar, half the group doesn't show up because of an emergency or a conflicting commitment.
How CEOs Can Help Improve Work-Life Balance in America
America is a global business leader, driving breakthroughs and disruptions that have shaken up a countless number of industries across the world. Too often however, an argument has gone hand-in-hand with this success that to sustain this pace of progress, we all need to be working long days, putting professional achievements above more important personal priorities.
The 4 Keys to Great Employee Perks That Won't Damage Company Culture
In the eight years I've been CEO of Credit Karma, perks have increasingly become an important way for Silicon Valley companies to recruit the best candidates. To appeal to prospective employees, companies have begun to offer everything from free meals and "unlimited" vacation, to onsite gyms. These perks are often portrayed as a company's attempt to create a productive utopia for its employees.
4 Lessons From a Year in the Unicorn Club
When Credit Karma began in 2007, venture capital dollars were a lot scarcer than they are today. In 2015, a significant increase in private market investment has driven a subsequent spike in attention around valuations and led to the now probably over-hyped "unicorn club" for companies with valuations greater than $1 billion, which Credit Karma joined in September 2014.
The Importance Of Choosing Great Co-founders
When I had the idea to start Credit Karma in 2007, one of the first things I did was look for people who would challenge and complement me while building a company. Starting a business from the ground up is an imposing task filled with risk. I knew I couldn't do it on my own. To be successful, I would need to find people who would play devil's advocate with me and make things better, supplementing and strengthening my own vision along the way.
Keep Credit Checks Out Of Employment Decisions
Is it right for an employer to check a potential employee's credit report, as an assessment of their character? Two weeks ago, Elizabeth Warren, Democratic Senator from Massachusetts, hit the headlines with an op-ed in support of the Equal Employment for All bill she helped introduce at the end of 2013, which would outlaw such an action. As it stands, employers in many states are able to check a potential employee's credit report with that person's consent.
5 Realities About Student Debt Presidential Candidates Are Ignoring
As the election campaign heats up on each side of the aisle, student loans have become a central issue. Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton have made proposals for comprehensive legislation that combine debt relief, the expansion of income-based student loan repayment plans, greater subsidies for colleges that cut tuition costs, and lower federal interest rates. Republican candidates have publicly supported some, but not all, of these reforms. Growing student debt is a major economic problem.
The 3 Biggest Technical Challenges Facing Growing Companies
As technology continues to evolve and change at faster and faster rates, the opportunities it keeps spinning up are huge. Twenty years ago, a company like Credit Karma would have not been possible. An explosion in available data has allowed us to bring new transparency to consumer credit and to build a platform where banks and customers come together in more meaningful ways.
3 Tips for Building a More Powerful Connection With Consumers
We began offering free credit scores at Credit Karma in 2008 because we felt that people shouldn't have to pay for this data. As worthwhile as that mission was, our success as a company would have been much harder if we weren't able to translate that into a story that consumers could identify with and a brand they could relate to. A great point of pride for us at Credit Karma is the connection we've created with our members over the last seven years.
How to Maintain Startup Values While Operating at Scale
Credit Karma was built on an idea that doing the right thing and helping the consumer was the smart business choice. Working in the credit industry many years ago gave me first hand insight into the real impact credit reporting had over the lives of everyday Americans and the need for greater transparency and access to this information.
The 4 Key Beliefs Of Mobile-First Companies
With the explosion in popularity of smartphones in the last five years, at Credit Karma we've had to solve the same business problems in an entirely new format. In 2007, when we were founded, our members had a very different relationship with technology than they do in 2015. In part, it has meant adapting our product to mobile, which we've done successfully. Long term, it is about accepting that our audience is increasingly going to live on mobile.
The 5 Keys To Successful VC Fundraising
When I had the idea for Credit Karma eight years ago, a service that would provide consumers with free access to their credit scores, I knew it wasn't something that could be bootstrapped with $50. I needed a team to bring the idea to life. There were three of us, originally, and we knew we wouldn't have the revenue model in place to support the business for a while. Like so many other new startups, our survival was going to depend on our ability to raise venture capital.
The Key Steps to Managing a Heavy Workload
As CEO of a rapidly growing company it can feel like I'm running from fire-to-fire, dealing with the pressing needs of the company while trying to address longer-term needs. There are parts of the job I instinctively gravitate to, there are the things that bubble up within the company and there are requests for my time that come from outside. The demands on my time are always in flux. There are points in the last eight years where my workload has taken a toll on me.
Why Mission-Driven Businesses Can Take Over the World
Early on in my career I worked at Upromise, which was founded on the philosophy that everyone should be able to afford a college education. It was my first foray into working for a mission-driven company that was viable as a business without compromising the ideas it was founded upon. It taught me about what it meant to be a truly pro-consumer company, focused as much on helping consumers as it was on conducting the business itself.
5 Tips For Adapting To The New Mobile Reality
When we started to build Credit Karma in 2007 the first iPhone had just been unveiled, but there was still no way to know just how much smartphones were going to change how we consume information. Credit Karma was built for a desktop world. In 2015 this environment isn't obsolete, but it is much less dominant. Like almost every company in the market, we've had to put a lot of effort and thought toward adapting our product for this new mobile reality.
The 5 Key Ingredients of a Happy Workplace
In the early days of a startup, workplace culture takes care of itself. You have a small team, things are moving quickly and everyone knows everyone and is involved in everything that's happening. It's often intense, but that level of involvement breeds its own excitement and contentment. When your company grows past a certain point, creating a happy workplace takes a lot of consideration. A happy company is a productive company.
4 Overlooked Truths About Credit Scores
In America today, three major credit bureaus--TransUnion, Equifax and Experian--maintain detailed credit reports on most consumers 18 years and over. This system has roots going back over 100 years. Credit scoring emerged later, when the Fair Isaac Corporation (FICO) launched it's first scoring system to predict consumer lending risk in the late 1950s.
6 Strategies For Building A Culture of Innovation
When Credit Karma was founded, there were just a few of us for the first couple of years, giving everything we had to bring the company to life. As a founder, your relationship to the product changes when new people are added to the company. You want them to feel compelled to drive the product forward and question the status quo, rather than falling in line. It forces you to consider the company environment you're creating. It is a question that only grows with importance over time.
6 Tips For Positive Brand Building
When we launched the Credit Karma platform in 2008, we were offering free credit scores at a time when consumers were used to deception from other companies, often getting pulled into expensive subscription programs when they thought they were getting their credit scores for free. Because of this, one of our first goals as a company was to elevate our name above everyone else's.
A 5 Step Guide For Responsible Data Use
As uneasy as "big data" makes some people, the economic foundation of the internet is built on consumer information. Companies like Google and Facebook are economically viable because of the possibilities that have been opened up by leveraging data for targeted advertising. While big data raises legitimate concerns around surveillance and privacy, data-driven business models are not going away.
7 Steps to Building Better Business Relationships
For all the attention given to developing unbeatable sales strategies and cutting-edge business negotiation techniques, great business relationships aren't as mysterious or complicated as some want you to believe. There's little trick to it. The traits that serve you best in business are the ones that serve you best in life. Business people are, by and large, just people.
A 5-Step Guide For More Productive Meetings
Attending meetings is a reality of working in any office. Good meetings facilitate good communication. Information is exchanged efficiently and people have access to the necessary perspectives. Meetings help employees align around important goals and reduce unwanted surprises. They foster positive relationships by bringing people face-to-face and help prevent the sorts of silos and echo chambers that can develop inside a big company.
