(WAVY) — The March 12 terror attack inside Constant Hall at Old Dominion University has forever changed how Jah-ire Utarte views Memorial Day. “Memorial Day never really had a direct connection to me,” Utarte said. “It does now.” Utarte was in the front row of an ROTC classroom when an armed terrorist opened fire. The class instructor, Lieutenant Colonel Brandon Shah, immediately charged the gunman and, despite being shot, wrestled him to the ground.

Volunteers place 15,403 flags at Suffolk Cemetery for Memorial Day Original

SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Dozens of volunteers gathered Friday morning at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk for an annual tradition ahead of Memorial Day. Each volunteer placed an American Flag before Monday’s ceremony in front of every grave marker on the property, 15,403 to be exact. The annual ceremony honors and remembers all men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our Nation, from the Revolutionary War 250 years ago to the present day.
