Investigating the Relationship Between Demographic Factors and Perceptions of Unwanted Sexual Attention in Nightlife Settings

ABSTRACT Few studies have examined individuals’ perceptions of nightlife-related unwanted sexual attention (UWSA; i.e. interpretations of what behaviors constitute non-consensual sexual advances). This study investigates whether sociodemographic factors influence perceptions of UWSA in nightlife settings. In total, 652 Australian participants were recruited via social media advertisements and a panel provider (64.1% women), aged 18 to 63 (Mdn  = 26; IQR = 23, 30).

Credit: Unsplash/CC0 Public Domain A night out should be about friends, dancing and fun. But our new research shows sexual harm is an all-too-common experience. We interviewed 232 nightlife patrons in Geelong, Victoria, and found half the women and almost 1 in 3 men experienced some form of sexual harm on a night out in the past three months. Sexual harm included non-physical actions such as leering and unwanted sexual comments, and physical behaviors such as groping and forced kissing.
