Risk assessment of early-onset sepsis in extremely preterm infants: implications for antibiotic stewardship
Abstract To identify risk factors for early-onset sepsis (EOS) in extremely preterm infants. This retrospective study included 554 infants at 22–296/7 weeks’ gestation at Parkland Hospital Dallas, Texas, from 2018 to 2023. Proven EOS was defined by positive blood culture within 72 hours after birth; suspected EOS by ≥5 days of antibiotics despite negative cultures. Remaining infants served as controls. Maternal, neonatal, delivery, and placental characteristics were compared.
A Conceptual Guide for Developing Experiential Social Intelligence in Psychiatric Nursing
1 Introduction Psychiatric nursing is characterized by repeated exposure to complex interpersonal encounters that require more than technical knowledge (Eltrass et al. 2026; Stevenson et al. 2015), yet the development of the relational competence needed to navigate these moments remains insufficiently theorized.
Effects of a respiratory care protocol incorporating less invasive surfactant administration in infants born at 30–34 weeks’ gestation
Abstract To evaluate the impact of a respiratory care protocol (RCP) including stepwise escalation of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) guided by FiO2 and less invasive surfactant administration (LISA) in infants born at 30–34 weeks’ gestational age (GA). We compared maternal and neonatal variables between cohorts of preterm infants born January 2017–Sept 2018, (pre-RCP) and Oct 2018–Dec 2020 (post-RCP).
Supporting Social Work Entrepreneurs in the Adaptation and Implementation of Interventions Transferring into Low- and Middle-Income Countries
ABSTRACT In resource-scarce settings, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), implementing and delivering social protection programmes is often reliant upon social workers or volunteers acting as social entrepreneurs. Given the high cost and time involved in developing and testing social interventions, practitioners in LMICs often focus on replicating borrowed interventions which require adaptation of the intervention to fit the local context.

Assessing the stability and sporicidal efficacy of oxidising disinfectants
Summary The role of the healthcare environment in the transmission of clinical pathogens is well established. We investigated the chemical stability and sporicidal efficacy of oxidising disinfectant products in the presence of simulated clean and medical dirty conditions. Performance of chlorine-releasing agents (sodium dichloroisocyanurate, chlorine dioxide and hypochlorous acid) was concentration-dependent, with 1000 ppm chlorine showing reduced stability and efficacy in dirty conditions.

SEX DIFFERENCES IN THE PRESENTATION, TREATMENT AND OUTCOMES OF PATIENTS WITH HOMOZYGOUS FAMILIAL HYPERCHOLESTEREMIA
BACKGROUND Homozygous familial hypercholesteremia (HoFH) is a rare, autosomal recessive lipid metabolism disorder characterized by high levels of LDL-C, and premature cardiovascular disease. HoFH affects equal numbers of female and male patients. Sex-related differences are well described in heterozygous FH, but whether there are sex-related differences in patients with HoFH is unknown.
Comparison of capillary blood self-collection using the Tasso-SST device with venous phlebotomy for anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibody measurement
Keywords COVID-19 Seroprevalence Tasso device Self-collection Anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibody measurement 1. Introduction Collection of blood samples for seroprevalence studies can be challenging, especially those that are large-scale. In many studies, participants are asked to provide a venous blood sample. This method is logistically challenging, requiring skilled phlebotomists who are frequently in high demand for clinical services, and associated with some discomfort.

Lifetime Interpersonal Violence or Abuse and Diabetes Rates by Sex and Race
Abstract Introduction Lifetime exposure to interpersonal violence or abuse (IVA) has been associated with several chronic diseases including adult-onset diabetes, yet this pattern has not been confirmed by sex and race within a large cohort. Methods Data from the Southern Community Cohort Study collected 2002-2009 and 2012-2015 were used to explore the relationship between lifetime IVA and diabetes (n=25,251).
Fast and Pluribus: Impacts of a Globalizing McDonald’s
The connection between globalization and McDonald’s is a tale of scholarly metonymy. There’s no textual shortage of evidence that references the now-global fast food chain’s success in other countries, often linking it to themes of self-sufficiency, post-industrial stability, and democracy-formed capitalism.

Growth after implementing a donor breast milk program in neonates <33 weeks gestational age or birthweight <1500 grams: Retrospective cohort study - Journal of Perinatology
Abstract Background Donor breast milk (DBM) feeding has been associated with less growth than formula in preterm infants. Zinc content in DBM is insufficient to support growth in preterm infants. Objective To compare growth from birth to discharge, macro- and micronutrient intake and the frequency of poor growth before (Epoch-1) and after (Epoch-2) implementing a DBM program.
HOMOZYGOUS FAMILIAL HYPERCHOLESTEROLEMIA IN CANADA
Homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HoFH) is life-threatening orphan disease characterized by high levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). Untreated patients often present with extensive xanthomas and marked premature atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) before the age of 20. Prior to the advent of statins and extracorporeal LDL filtration techniques, survival beyond 30 years of age was unusual.
Electrometry of a single resonator mode at a Rydberg-atom--superconducting-circuit interface
Abstract The electric-field distribution in a single mode of a λ/4 superconducting coplanar waveguide (CPW) microwave resonator has been probed using beams of helium Rydberg atoms. In the experiments the atoms were prepared in the 1s55s3S1 Rydberg level by laser photoexcitation. They then traveled over the CPW resonator that was fabricated on a NbN superconducting chip operated at 3.8 K.
Understanding the Relationship Between Maternal Thyroid Hormones and Neurodevelopmental Outcomes | Environmental Health Perspectives | Vol. 2020, No. 1
Understanding the Relationship Between Maternal Thyroid Hormones and Neurodevelopmental Outcomes Abstract Background: In utero exposures to endocrine disrupting chemicals can impact a range of health outcomes for the offspring. Specifically, when considering potential disruptions to proper maternal thyroid functioning due to chemical exposures there is increasing concern that adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes may occur in the offspring.

Letter: Enter the country legally
The 54-inch article in the July 1 edition of the Deseret News, "The travel ban ruling creates conflict," worries that the president, law enforcement and the people are hostile to those who break the law. It is a misdemeanor to enter the country illegally, with civil penalties and a year in prison. All illegal aliens can avoid hostility by simply entering the country lawfully at ports of entry.
Muqtada: Muqtada al-Sadr, the Shia Revival, and the Struggle for Iraq
Soon after invading Iraq in 2003, the United States encountered a major obstacle to piecing together a sustainable state -- in the person of a dour 30-year-old Shiite cleric. Muqtada al-Sadr remains to this day a force and a problem for the Iraqis as well as the Americans. Who is Sadr? His cousin (whose daughter he would later marry) the politically active Ayatollah Muhammad Baqir al-Sadr was brutally executed in 1980.
Transient receptor potential (TRP) channels: a metabolic TR(i)P to obesity prevention and therapy
Cellular transport of ions, especially by ion channels, regulates physiological function. The transient receptor potential (TRP) channels, with 30 identified so far, are cation channels with high calcium permeability. These ion channels are present in metabolically active tissues including adipose tissue, liver, gastrointestinal tract, brain (hypothalamus), pancreas and skeletal muscle, which suggests a potential role in metabolic disorders including obesity.
Green Balloons
For my son’s fifth birthday party we blew up balloons in the kitchen and every time we found a green one I had to go outside and let it go. The first time I ran out, my son ran after me and in the backyard he frowned and asked why I did that. I couldn’t begin to explain so I told him it was fun and he should try it. His balloon was red. He let it go and laughed. It was a bright day with a wind that made the balloons dance. The second time I found a green one he said “Mamma” and his voice was small.

The pharmacodynamic effects of combined administration of flibanserin and alcohol
What is known and objective Flibanserin is a serotonin 5-HT agonist and 5-HT antagonist approved for the treatment of acquired, generalized hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) in premenopausal women. Because of the increased risk of hypotension- and syncope-related adverse events (AEs) observed with coadministration of flibanserin and alcohol, alcohol use is contraindicated.
Observation and interpretation of energetic ion conics in Jupiter's polar magnetosphere
NASA's Juno spacecraft successfully completed its first science polar pass over Jupiter's northern and southern aurora, with all the instruments powered, on 27 August 2016. Observations of conical energetic proton distributions at low altitudes (<6?R ) over the northern polar region are interpreted as resulting from transversely (to the local magnetic field lines) accelerated H+ at a position planetward of the point of observation.
Reflection imaging with earthquake sources and dense arrays
The M 5.8 earthquake that occurred in Louisa County, Virginia, on 23 August 2011 provided an opportunity to record with several “high density” seismic arrays, in addition to traditional, sparse temporary seismic networks. Traditional aftershock networks consist of a few dozen stations spread over tens of kilometers. As a result, the recorded seismic waveforms suffer from spatial aliasing that is so severe that many types of waveform processing are not applicable.
Genetic assignment of large seizures of elephant ivory reveals Africa’s major poaching hotspots
The illegal ivory trade threatens the persistence of stable wild elephant populations. The underground and covert nature of poaching makes it difficult to police. Wasser et al. used genetic tools to identify the origins of elephant tusks seized during transit (see the Perspective by Hoelzel). The majority of source animals were part of just a few wild elephant populations in Africa—and just two areas since 2006.

Tolerance of a high-protein baked-egg product in egg-allergic children
To view the full text, please login as a subscribed user or purchase a subscription . Click here to view the full text on ScienceDirect. Egg allergy is one of the most common immunoglobulin E (IgE)–mediated food allergies. Extensively heating egg has been found to decrease its allergenicity and 64% to 84% of children allergic to egg have been found to tolerate baked-egg products. Because there is no reliable method for predicting baked-egg tolerance, oral food challenges remain the gold standard.
Containing Arab Nationalism: The Eisenhower Doctrine and the Middle East
Coming just a decade after the 1947 Truman Doctrine, the Eisenhower Doctrine was the second Cold War presidential doctrine keyed to the Middle East. This time the Soviet threat was seen as reaching into the heart of the Arab world, but the more immediate strategic goal in the wake of the Suez crisis was lining up Arab states against Egyptian President Gamal Abdel al-Nasser and his brand of Arab nationalism -- which proved to be a hard sell.

Genetic assignment of large seizures of elephant ivory reveals Africa’s major poaching hotspots
The illegal wildlife trade has become the world’s fourth largest transnational organized crime and African elephant ivory is a major part of that trade (1). An estimated 40,000 African elephants were killed in 2011 (2), with 41 tons of illegal ivory seized (3). Given the 51 tons of ivory seized in 2013, the number of elephants killed that year could have exceeded 50,000, out of an estimated 434,000 elephants remaining (4).
Pakistan on the Brink: The Future of America, Pakistan, and Afghanistan
Rashid’s 2008 book on Pakistan was titled Descent Into Chaos. Four years later, the move from “chaos” to “the brink” does not augur any improvement. Rashid presents Pakistan as a failing state with an irresponsible civilian leadership and a military fixated on threats from India. Next door in Afghanistan, President Hamid Karzai is a disappointment, and the Obama administration waffles with surges, announced withdrawals, and tentative talks with the Afghan Taliban.
Algeria: France’s Undeclared War
In the dismantling of Western empires that took place following World War II, no case was more dramatic or more tragic than the brutal eight-year war the Algerians fought, beginning in 1954, to end over 100 years of colonial domination by France. This confrontation has never lacked its historians, memoirists, and polemicists.
The Lingering Conflict: Israel, the Arabs, and the Middle East, 1948–2011
This book was first published in 1999 with the title Waging Peace: Israel and the Arabs at the End of the Century. An updated edition, Waging Peace: Israel and the Arabs, 1948–2003, appeared in 2004. Now, Waging Peace has given way to The Lingering Conflict, and the conflict it describes pits Israel against not just the Arabs but the entire Middle East, a reflection of the country’s increasingly fraught relations with Iran and Turkey.
The Shift: Israel-Palestine From Border Struggle to Ethnic Conflict
This dense little book, a fact-filled account of Israel and the Palestinians since the June 1967 war, treats not peace-process politics but actual developments on the ground.
How Pakistan Negotiates With the United States: Riding the Roller Coaster

The Israel-Palestine Conflict: Contested Histories
For more than three decades, Caplan has been producing meticulous studies of different periods of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In this book, he goes beyond the basic chronological narrative to analyze the self-images and images of the other that the Israelis and the Palestinians have brought to their long-standing confrontation.
My Prison, My Home: One Woman’s Story of Captivity in Iran
In December 2006, while on her way to the Tehran airport to return to the United States after visiting her 93-year-old mother, Esfandiari lost her passport and other belongings in a government-staged robbery. Weeks of house arrest and questioning soon turned into months, capped by 105 days of solitary confinement in Tehran’s notorious Evin Prison.
The International Relations of the Persian Gulf
Gause sees the three big states of Iran, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia, together with the small states of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates, as forming a distinct system of international relations in which the foreign policy of each country is shaped largely by its relations with the others (plus its relationship with a dominant outside actor). He demonstrates the workings of this distinctive system from the early 1970s to the present.
The Cartoons That Shook the World
On September 30, 2005, the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten, having invited 42 Danish cartoonists to draw the Prophet Muhammad “as they see him,” published the 12 cartoons submitted. Danish Muslims (who compose four percent of Denmark’s population) protested, Muslim governments intervened diplomatically, Muslims boycotted Danish products, the cartoonists received death threats, and mobs sacked Danish embassies around the Middle East.
Stones Into Schools: Promoting Peace With Books, Not Bombs, in Afghanistan and Pakistan
Stones Into Schools follows the 2006 best-selling book Three Cups of Tea in telling of Mortenson’s continuing efforts to build girls’ schools in the remotest regions of Afghanistan and Pakistan. Like its predecessor, this book is a heartwarming story of good deeds accomplished and in the works, told with an intimacy that makes the people and places presented come alive.
