The Burlington City Council heard from Recreation Manager Brad Selby about how the Dankwardt Park Pool fared in the 2023 season during their work session Monday night. A shortage of revenues is an ongoing issue, Selby told the council. An important measurement of pool usage — the number of children in swim lessons — is still down in 2023 from pre-pandemic levels. In a normal pre-COVID year about 100 children attended swim lessons but this year only 80 participated.

Burlington Urban Service to provide free rides to BCSD students

The Burlington City Council signed an agreement on Monday night that will make it easier for students who attend the Burlington Community School District to use the Burlington Urban service. While many children use the school buses, some students who do not qualify for that sometimes use BUS to get to and from school. The agreement will mean that all students can use the bus for free. “This works better for the school and for us,” Burlington Mayor Jon Billups said.

The three men facing off for the 2-year Burlington City Council seats spoke in front of the Greater Burlington Partnership Monday morning. At the candidate forum, they discussed issues facing the city and what it means to be an ambassador for the community. Football coach Antonio Bailey, pastor Chris Roepke, and retired business owner Terry Schnack are running to replace State Rep. Matt Rinker. Rinker served on the Burlington City Council for five years before he was elected to the state house.

My first job was working at The Hawk Eye in Burlington, Iowa. A big paper for a small town in rural south east Iowa.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes. My dad bought my brother and me one to practice typing on and we loved it!

People expect news at their fingertips. This means journalists must be ready to use their phones to quickly produce content
