Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

I was an intern at WSTM in Syracuse when they had several producers quit. I was still in grad school but begged for a shot and was hired.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes, but only for fun. Not for actual work.

How is social media changing news?

Social media is making news accessible to the public in a speed never seen previously. It's also allowing citizens to take an increased role.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

Why did you become a journalist?

I wanted to change the world, and be the force of positive change I think the world needs. Uncover the truth and expose it. Very idealistic.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

I spent months going through data that proved that Pittsburgh public schools were not doing fire drills properly.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Learn about what everybody's roles around you are. Learn as much as you can from people in different roles to better work together.

What's your favorite drink?

Iced latte or red wine.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Playing outside with my daughter.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

The New York Times and the New Yorker
