But if you think your rental car is one place to cut costs, think again. A quick trip to Denver for her niece’s graduation, that was the plan for Amy Falkowski and her 77-year-old mother. The rental car was booked and paid for by Falkowski's sister, but when they landed in Denver, she says nothing was where it was supposed to be.

Air conditioners recalled over fire risk. Here's how to check if your unit is affected

With temperatures nearing the triple digits, you may be blasting your air conditioning unit. But you may want to check to make sure it's not part of a nationwide recall. The Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a recall for more than 13,000 window and wall AC units from Daikin Comfort Technologies, saying the Amana brand air conditioners or heat pumps have been recalled due to a fire risk. The units are white and the brand name "Amana" is printed on the control covers.

If you’re having trouble paying your utility bills, help is available. If you’ve already fallen behind on payments, know that by law, utility companies may not disconnect service for nonpayment if temperatures are forecast at or above 90 degrees. According to the Illinois Commerce Commission, this year ComEd started offering sliding-scale discount rates for income-eligible customers. The monthly discount could fall anywhere between 5% and 80% of your utility bill.
