A packed house of 1,100 people showed up at the Orpheum Theater this past weekend for the New Orleans premiere of “They Fight,” starring award-winning actor and New Orleanian Wendell Pierce. The feature film is now streaming on Hulu and Disney+ and based on a true story — first chronicled in The Washington Post and later a documentary — about a group of young boxers in Washington, D.C., who found a role model in a man named Walter Madigan.

If necessity is the mother of invention, then writer/director Scott Fivelson’s need for a new documentary subject has led him into both fantastical and historical territory. Fivelson (“American Reel,” “3 Holes and a Smoking Gun”) wanted to do a documentary about a famous director, but discovered most of them had already been profiled on film. So, he invented one.

In ‘Ganking Mr. Guidry,’ a New Orleans playwright casts a new light on a plantation rebellion

A 2019 New Orleans Advocate article about the little-known former Company Plantation in Algiers on the West Bank caught the eye of playwright Harold Ellis Clark, who is originally from that area. Learning about the plantation inspired him to write a play about the African Americans who were housed there after slavery ended. The play, “Ganking Mr. Guidry,” debuts next week at Le Petit Theatre in the French Quarter for a limited run.
