Yelich’s walk-off grand slam could be a sign that his slow start is coming to an end
About 2 minutes reading time. MILWAUKEE (AP) — Christian Yelich is starting to find his groove this season. Yelich hit the first walk-off grand slam of his career Tuesday night, going deep in the 10th inning to lift the Milwaukee Brewers to a 5-1 win over the Boston Red Sox. “Yeah, it took me quite a while to check off walk-off homer, so it was pretty cool,” said Yelich, who is in his 13th season, including the last eight with the Brewers.
Nic Enright completes journey from cancer diagnosis to MLB debut with Cleveland Guardians
CLEVELAND (AP) — Nic Enright thought he would be caught up in the emotions of finally making it to the majors this past weekend. Compared to everything he has dealt with the past three years since being diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma, the 28-year-old Cleveland Guardians right-hander was able to take everything in stride. Enright threw two scoreless innings and struck out three for Cleveland on Sunday in . He was called up on Saturday after Hunter Gaddis was placed on the bereavement list.

Top 100 Relievers for Save+Hold Leagues: 8/28
We’ve passed the midway point of the season, and there still remains a great deal of uncertainty in a lot of bullpens. The injury rate also has increased to what feels like a record high, and it’s affected pitchers more than anyone else. Two of the best relievers in the game, Drew Pomeranz and Nick Anderson, landed on the IL this past week. Anderson should be back next week while Pomeranz is likely a week or two away at least.
Closing Time 8/25: Ranking the Top 30 Closers Every Tuesday
We had our first big trade of the season this past weekend, with the Red Sox sending Brandon Workman and Heath Hembree to the Phillies for Nick Pivetta and prospect Connor Seabold. With Hector Neris struggling mightily to begin the year, Workman has slid right into the Phillies closer role, and so far has seen mixed results. His walk rate remains way too high, but unlike last year, his BABIP (.483) is also higher than normal.
Top 100 Relievers for Save+Hold Leagues: 8/21
I said it yesterday but it’s worth repeating, Devin Williams fastball/changeup combo has been fantastic this season, leading to 48.8% K and 20.4% SwStr rates. Why the big improvement from last season? Well, it could be that his fastball velocity has remained the same while his changeup has lost 2 MPH and gained 8 inches of vertical drop. The pitch has literally been unhittable while racking up 14 K’s with a 60% Whiff rate.
Closing Time 8/18: Ranking the Top 30 Closers Every Tuesday
Aroldis Chapman returned to the field last night, and while he worked around a pair of hits, his stuff still looked as electric as ever. He featured seven 100+ mph fastballs out of the 20 pitches he threw and his slider looked good as well, finishing with a 44% CSW. Chapman averaged around 98 MPH on his fastball last year, so if he can sustain his 2017 velocity, to go with his improving slider, he may be the top closer in baseball again.
Top 100 Relievers for Save+Hold Leagues: 8/14
Jordan “don’t call me Ray” Romano has come from out of nowhere to be one of the most dominant set up men in baseball, featuring just a two-pitch mix, with both pitches grading out as plus. His fastball is up 2 MPH this season to 97 MPH, while his slider is also up 4 MPH, and now both are a serious problem for opposing hitters.
Closing Time 8/11: Ranking the Top 30 Closers Every Tuesday
It was a surprise to see Rafael Montero, fresh of the IL just this past Friday, not only make his first appearance in a save situation, but also work the next night in a save situation. The Rangers really needed to get him back after losing so many other pitchers to injuries but it’s still surprising to see him get thrown right into the first save situation of his career the first day back from an IL stint.
Top 100 Relievers for Save+Hold Leagues: 8/7
I’ll be the first to admit, I was skeptical about the James Karinchak hype this spring, concerned his command issues from the minors would prevent him from reaching his upside right away. Well so far, that couldn’t have been further from reality as Karinchak has walked just 2 hitters in 6.1 IP. His stuff is so good that he can live in the zone comfortably, not needing to rely on pinpoint command. So just how good is Karinchaks stuff?
Closing Time 8/4: Ranking the Top 30 Closers Every Tuesday
Instead of talking about someone who moved up or down the list here, I just want to point out how great Zack Britton has been so far this season, and if it were any other closer on this list returning from the IL, I’m not so sure he wouldn’t hang on to the job.
Top 100 Relievers for Save+Hold Leagues: 7/31
After earning the Rays first two saves of the season, it was certainly surprising to see Oliver Drake come into a situation in the 6th inning in his last outing, even if this is the Rays we are talking about. While he wasn’t great in that appearance, and it puts his closer status in doubt, I’m still confident in Drake’s ability to help those in SV+HD leagues for the rest of the season as long as he is seeing this high leverage work.
Closing Time 7/28: Ranking the Top 30 Closers Every Tuesday
Just one weekend into the baseball season and this is already quite messy. Honestly, I feel as though tiers 5-7 are not too far apart, as half the league has some bullpen uncertainty that needs ironing out. There are even questions in the top half of the group, especially after Seth Lugo was called upon to get the final four outs of the game last night as Edwin Diaz.
Closing Time: 60 Game Season Edition
Hey all. Baseball is finally back, and while not ideal, let’s hope we are able to get through a 60 game season safely. While the shortened season does have an impact on the game, it’s not going to cause a ton of movement here compared to my rankings back in March. There are some things that we should take into account, however, when looking into what relievers to target in a short season. First, the expectation for innings for most relievers should fall between 20-30 IP.
Four home runs carry Athletics to win over Rangers
ARLINGTON, Texas — Mark Canha's two-run home run off the left-field foul pole broke a fifth-inning tie as the Oakland Athletics beat the Texas Rangers 8-6 on Saturday night. The A's scored all their runs on homers. Matt Chapman (three-run homer in the third inning), Josh Phegley (two-run homer in the fourth) and Matt Olson (solo in the sixth). Oakland's 242 home runs are one short of the franchise record set in 1996.
Khris Davis, Marcus Semien hit two-run homers as Oakland Athletics beat New York Yankees
OAKLAND, Calif. — Khris Davis and Marcus Semien each hit a two-run homer to back Mike Fiers, and the Oakland Athletics beat the New York Yankees 6-4 on Wednesday night. Davis snapped an 0-for-17 slump — three at-bats shy of the longest hitless funk of his career — with his first home run since July 30 against Milwaukee and second since June 18.
Matt Chapman rallies Oakland Athletics past Milwaukee Brewers with two-run HR off Josh Hader
OAKLAND, Calif. — Matt Chapman hit a two-run home run off struggling closer Josh Hader in the eighth inning to break out of a long slump and the Oakland Athletics beat the Milwaukee Brewers 5-3 Thursday. The A's trailed 3-2 when Robbie Grossman walked leading off the eighth against Hader, an All-Star reliever who pitched for a third consecutive day for the first time in his career.
Khris Davis' two-out, two-run single in 9th lifts Oakland Athletics over Minnesota Twins
MINNEAPOLIS — Khris Davis had been a fixture in the cleanup spot for most of the past four seasons, putting together three straight 40-homer, 100-RBI seasons. He hadn't been living up to his usual standards in 2019 and he was slotted into the sixth spot in the batting order the past four games. Oakland's designated hitter was in the right spot at the right time on Saturday.
Fantasy Baseball Category Analysis: Week 14
Happy Independence Day, everyone. I hope you get to spend it with the people you love and that you, especially, stay safe. Typically, I write a lede to set the tone for the categorical impact players you should pick up. That’s not the case this week. This week, I want to just focus on Tyler Skaggs. The loss of Skaggs is tragic. Seeing the outpouring of emotion from his teammates, peers, and people who knew him well shows the type of person he was.
Beau Taylor and Matt Chapman back Daniel Mengden as Oakland athletics beat the St.Louis Cardinals
ST. LOUIS — Beau Taylor and Matt Chapman homered, and Daniel Mengden pitched six scoreless innings to lead the Oakland Athletics to a 2-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday night. Mengden (2-1) gave up four hits and struck out five for his first win since May 18 at Detroit. He took the starting rotation spot of Frankie Montas, who was suspended 80 games June 21 for testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance.
