Jack: The True Story of Jack & the Beanstalk Book Review
age 8+ Exciting, funny, fractured fairy tale of boy vs. giants. Parents need to know that Liesl Shurtliff's Jack: The True Story of Jack & the Beanstalk is another fractured fairy tale from the author of Rump: The True Story of Rumpelstiltskin. It follows the traditional story with a few alterations, most notably that Jack is 12 years old. Some characters from Rump appear, but it's a stand-alone story.

From the New York Times bestselling author of Rump comes a thrilling new middle grade trilogy about three city kids who get on the wrong subway train and wind up on a wild, magical mystery-adventure throughout time. Imaginative, daring, and packed with fun, Time Castaways is perfect for fans of Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library and Percy Jackson. Super Fiction for Summer Reading
Summertime is the best time of the year to sit under a shady tree and enjoy a good book. Here are some of the best and newest books that kids, and parents, will read from beginning to end in a matter of a few days. Each of these books are good for ages nine through adult, but are good for all ages if read out loud. Twerp, by Mark Goldblatt, is one of those outstanding books that all kids, from 4th grade through 9th, should read. It’s also a book that would be a great read-aloud by families.
24 Authors Reflect on This Moment in Women's History
March is Women’s History Month, and in the U.S. in 2018, the month bears particular significance. Last year’s Women’s March counted at least 3 million attendees in the U.S. alone, and this year’s #MeToo movement has sparked women of all stripes to come forth and tell their stories in voices loud and clear. 2016-2018 may be the era of perpetual metaphorical dumpster fires, but it has also been a time of coming together, particularly on the part of women.
An Outcast Girl Searches for Her Missing Father in ‘Furthermore’
Alice Alexis Queensmeadow is born with no color — hair and skin as white as milk, only a touch of honey in her eyes. This might not be so significant had she not been born into a world where color is everything. In Tahereh Mafi’s “Furthermore,” the land of Ferenwood is drenched in color, which its colorful citizens use like currency, right along with magic. Poor, colorless Alice is looked down upon and underestimated because of her pallor.
Red: The True Story of Red Riding Hood | San Diego Book Review
A book telling about the famous fairy tale character Little Red-Riding Hood may not seem very exciting, but this story is Red from a different perspective. Red is not scared of anything but magic. But when her granny falls ill, Red is forced to used magic. Red: The True Story of Red Riding Hood by Liesal Shurtliff is a recreation of the tale “Little Red-Riding Hood.’’ It has the same idea as the children’s tale, but the author added some other twists to the story.

Rump : the true story of Rumpelstiltskin by @LieslShurtliff Delightful retelling for MG readers
Rump : the true story of Rumpelstiltskin By Liesl Shurtliff I am not sure if this book is going to be available in New Zealand yet but I sure do hope so. It has the most delightfully funny trailer and the story is sure to please middle grade readers (and one or two adult ones here as well). For years we have known about Rumpelstiltskin but do we know the real story? Rump is 12 years old and seems to be an easy target for all manner of taunts and jokes.
The best middle grade retellings of classics & fairy tales
Who am I? I grew up reading all kinds of stories, but I was also a big fan of playing outdoors. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer was always a favorite of mine, but as an adult, I realized something…the one main female character who was my age, Becky Thatcher, didn’t seem to like adventure at all! I loved the idea of Becky being as much of a mischief-maker as the boys – and that became my first novel, The Actual and Truthful Adventures of Becky Thatcher.
