Introduction Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a class of organic compounds that are carcinogenic, teratogenic, and can induce mutations in organisms (Moore et al., 2015). PAHs are persistent organic pollutants that have attracted substantial attention due to their environmental persistence, bioaccumulation, ability to migrate long distances, and high toxicity (El-Shahawi et al., 2010; Li et al., 2010; Zhou et al., 2020).
