Virginia Supreme Court hears oral arguments on redistricting Original

Although a judge banned state officials from certifying the referendum’s results, Virginia’s Democratic leaders say this fight is far from over. WASHINGTON — On Monday, Virginia’s Supreme Court began officially hearing cases for and against redistricting in the commonwealth. Earlier this month, voters supported a referendum that would redraw Virginia’s 11 congressional districts, possibly giving Democrats a 10-to-one advantage in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Public weighs in on tax hikes in Montgomery County

Montgomery County’s Council heard from the public on Tuesday morning as part of ongoing discussion around potential tax increases. The county’s leaders are split on two approaches to raise revenue: either raise taxes, or make cuts to county agencies, and lower wage increases. As both sides argue the merits of each approach, both believe they’re necessary to keep the County funded.

When it comes to Black Maternal Health in D.C., the numbers speak for themselves. Black women are responsible for around half of all births in the District, yet represent up to 90% of pregnancy-related deaths. More than 80% of those maternal deaths in D.C. occur among Black women in neighborhoods East of the Anacostia River.
