Police on alert for gift card phone scam

Police are seeking more information on a novel type of phone scam after two Auckland residents received calls from individuals asking them to purchase gift cards. In both cases, the calls appeared to be from individuals the person being targeted already knew. Central Auckland resident Xueshui Chi received a phone call from a number he didn't recognise on 16 June, with the caller claiming to be a former boss and asking him to buy Apple gift cards worth $2000.
