The Consumer Electronics Show (CES), one of the world’s largest and most influential technology trade shows, often functions as the industry’s crystal ball. In any given year, you can look at the show’s hot products to get a glimpse of how the near future is about to unfold. In fact, many of the technologies debuted at the show go on to become household names or popular staples years later.

Artificial intelligence (AI) isn’t just disrupting how we work. It’s also going to revolutionize how we eat. More and more industries and roles are adopting AI tools like ChatGPT to do their work more efficiently and unlock capabilities that they didn’t have before. Chefs, culinary professionals, and home cooks are no exception. AI increasingly is being used in kitchens and restaurants to push the boundaries of what’s possible in the culinary arts.

Some workers are afraid of losing their job to AI. Some top CEOs seem to agree. Fiverr CEO Micha Kaufman told his employees in early 2025 that “AI is coming for your jobs.” Shopify CEO Tobi Lutke notified employees they needed to justify why AI couldn’t do a job before hiring anyone else.

Change comes at you fast. In late May 2025, Google announced its Veo 3 video generation model at its I/O conference. Early testers were stunned by the photorealistic video, audio, and dialogue that the model produced. Just a month later, a single director used Veo 3 to create a hyper-realistic AI-generated ad for betting platform Kalshi. The ad took three days to create and cost $400 in Veo 3 credits.

Millions of people use artificial intelligence (AI) tools like ChatGPT daily to do everything from generating code to drawing images to creating business ideas. Those AI tools appear to be getting better. Back in November 2022 when it was launched, ChatGPT was powered by GPT-3.5, at the time the most powerful model offered by OpenAI. Yet GPT-3.5 was quickly eclipsed by GPT-4 just a few months later.
Shaping the Future of Technology
In the ever-evolving world of technology, the influence of computer science on society is both profound and far-reaching. Once a niche field reserved for specialized researchers, computing has transformed into an essential discipline that shapes nearly every aspect of modern life. With the rise of online education and the growing accessibility of computer science degrees, we are entering an era where more people than ever can contribute to this transformative field.

A group of Chinese researchers just made a discovery that could threaten the security of the U.S. A member of the incoming U.S. presidential administration in particular might take issue with their findings. According to the South China Morning Post, a team of researchers was able to detect a drone with a profile similar to that of a stealth fighter, even though it was not emitting radio waves.
Addressing the Data Storage Crisis
Our increasingly digitized world is creating more data every year, including videos from ubiquitous smart phones, observations from billions of sensors and surveillance cameras, output from artificial intelligence, and much more. Until now, exponential growth in data storage capacity has largely kept pace with the flood of data at a steady cost. This trend may not continue, according to John Monroe at Furthur Market Research, who for almost 25 years, until 2022, was an analyst at Gartner.

The cat and mouse game of computer security has been on since at least the 1970s. There was John Draper’s infamous hack of telephone systems using a toy whistle from a Cap’n Crunch cereal box in 1971. On the good guy side, Ray Tomlinson wrote what is regarded as the first antivirus software in 1972, when his Reaper program eradicated the Creeper worm that his colleague Bob Thomas unleashed in an effort by the two to demonstrate possible scenarios. Fast forward to today.
Transactions and Serverless are Made for Each Other
Serverless cloud offerings are becoming increasingly popular for stateless applications because they simplify cloud deployment. This article argues that if serverless platforms could wrap functions in database transactions, they would also be a good fit for database-backed applications. There are two unique benefits of such a transactional serverless platform: time-travel debugging of past events and reliable program execution with “exactly-once” semantics.

Thousands of ordinary citizens are already using Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT) techniques, whether they know it or not. Online sleuths attempt to solve crimes by scouring social media posts for clues, and dating app users run potential suitors’ profiles through a reverse image search to verify they are who they say. OSINT—once the preserve of intelligence agencies and law enforcement—is becoming accessible, and artificial intelligence (AI) is powering the change.

There are things in life that are subjective, like beauty, taste, emotions, and feelings. However, when it comes to judging in competitive sports, decisions have become a lot more cut and dried, thanks to the use of artificial intelligence (AI) systems. Several sports organizations have been using AI to judge certain aspects of their competitions and games for years, but as the systems become more sophisticated, more are jumping on the bandwagon.

Dear KV, A recent small project at work required me to use JavaScript, and I was surprised to find the following note in the documentation (see https://bit.ly/3Bz3hC0) for a code that sets a timeout: “Also note that if the value isn’t a number, implicit type coercion is silently done on the value to convert it to a number—which can lead to unexpected and surprising results; see Non-number delay values are silently coerced into numbers for an example.” It is commonly accepted that languages...
Confidential Computing or Cryptographic Computing?
Increasingly stringent privacy regulations—for example, the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) or the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) in the U.S.—and sophisticated attacks leading to massive breaches have increased the demand for protecting data in use, or encryption in use.
The Gift that Keeps on Giving to Apple and Google
The mobile app Google Play Store and the Apple App Store are the gifts that keep on giving to Google and Apple, respectively. [I will use the lower-case “app stores” to refer to the generic portals, while capital case will refer to the specific one from Apple.] They generate revenue for the duopoly of Google and Apple through the fees assessed from all app developers for all in-app purchases, subscriptions, or paid downloads.

On its way to explore a distant asteroid, NASA’s Psyche spacecraft has done something that may be even more significant than its original mission. The craft is going to examine the mineral content of a deep-space asteroid, in the hope it can teach us more about the composition of the Earth’s own core. In the process, however, it has also shattered expectations for the effectiveness of deep space communication using laser technology.

Learning a language or meeting a long-term fitness goal can challenge even the most committed individual. As days morph into weeks or months, the ability to stay focused and engaged is critical. Badges, medals, leaderboards, rankings, and prizes all have served as motivational tools. Yet, digital technology has been, well, a game-changer.

In November 2022, ChatGPT took the world by storm, demonstrating that a chatbot could be sufficiently refined to be practical and useful (unlike earlier attempts like Microsoft’s disastrous Tay chatbot back in 2016). Now, after just two short years, generative AI technology has advanced by leaps and bounds, progressing quickly from simple text and image generation tools to advanced multimodal models that produce highly competent outputs across text, images, video, audio, and code.

“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” —George Santayana Back to Top Data was considered a material object, tied to bits, with no semantics per se. Knowledge was traditionally conceived as the immaterial object, living only in people’s minds and language. The destinies of data and knowledge became bound together, becoming almost inseparable, by the emergence of digital computing in the mid-20th century.

Digital payment systems offer consumers a fast, easy way to buy and pay without the need to carry cash or hassle with a credit card. Simply hold up your phone to a scanner, and digital payment services like Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Samsung Pay handle the rest by charging the payment to a card or deducting it from your bank account. This ease of use has caused digital payment systems, often used through one’s mobile device, to skyrocket in popularity.

It now is possible to use technology to raise the dead. Well, kind of. We haven’t cracked the code on how to live forever, or discovered how to bring someone back to biological life. (Although there are plenty of startups that aspire to solving those challenges.) Instead, it has become much easier and more common to “resurrect” the dead by creating lifelike artificial intelligence (AI) avatars of them.

Across the USA in an LSA
After two joyous years of ownership, and the goal of earning my private pilot certificate fulfilled, I decided to sell my Cessna 162 Skycatcher. It was time to upgrade to something bigger, faster, and with air conditioning. I found a buyer in Seattle, Washington. But they were more than 2,500 nm away and uncomfortable with flying it through the mountains. So was I. At first, I figured we’d just have a professional ferry pilot handle this. But then, I thought, why can’t I take it the whole way?
How I Got Arrested in Russ Hanneman’s McLaren (And Why You Need to Know Your Rights)
This is a true story about how Edgar Zabunyan’s abuse of power and reckless negligence almost cost me my career. | Photo, Courtesy of HBO. I’ve never been arrested in my life before this. I have no criminal record. My driving record is spotless (save a turn signal ticket). But less than 24 hours after taking possession of Russ Hanneman’s bright orange McLaren 650S Spider, I’ve got the boys in blue arresting me, towing the car, and going on about how they almost called in an “airship” to take me down.
AMG GT R: Mean Green McLaren Fighting Machine
A long sweeping highway interchange appears up ahead and I rotate the selector switch to Race mode on the Mercedes AMG GT R before gradually pushing deep into the gas pedal. As I enter the sweeper, the Gs start to pick up. With no sign of traction loss, I push harder on the accelerator. Then harder. I’ve underestimated this car. I keep adding throttle gradually throughout the entire turn and there’s not even a whimper of tire squeal.
AI Contest Aims to Build the Communications Network of the Future
AI Contest Aims to Build the Communications Network of the Future The tech and military communities are abuzz with the promise and peril of artificial intelligence (AI). Others warn of the danger that this type of technology may improve itself enough to become extremely powerful—and extremely dangerous.

Smartphone Apps for Social Good
The internet is chock-full of gripes about Millennials, the smartphone-obsessed generation that reached young adulthood at the turn of the century. Millenials are entitled, lazy, self- —and selfie- —absorbed, and uninterested in the world at large. They vex and puzzle employers in equal measure, and they cannot be counted on to do anything other than, well, whatever they feel like doing.

The World’s Quickest SUV: The BMW X6 M
The BMW X6 M doesn’t even make sense. It’s completely bonkers. It defies the laws of physics and leads me to believe that BMW’s M engineers are probably magical wizards and fly around on broomsticks. It’s faster than a BMW M5. Let me repeat that: it’s faster than an M5. It is the quickest car BMW makes. And it’s an SUV. I’m an automotive journalist and I wasn’t even remotely aware of how good this car is until the keys were thrown in my lap after a different vehicle I wanted was unavailable.
What Happens When Big Data Blunders?
What Happens When Big Data Blunders? You cannot browse technology news or dive into an industry report without typically seeing a reference to "big data," a term used to describe the massive amounts of information companies, government organizations, and academic institutions can use to do, well, anything. The problem is, the term "big data" is so amorphous that it hardly has a tangible definition.

Got a Big Idea? It's Too Small and Here's Why
I just came across an essay on Y Combinator founder Paul Graham‘s blog in which he talks about “Frighteningly Ambitious Startup Ideas.” According to Graham, “the biggest ideas seem to threaten your identity: you wonder if you’d have enough ambition to carry them through.” Is lack of ambition here in Silicon Valley, the land of big ideas, really so prevalent? If so, I think it’s time to embrace ambition, not shun it. It’s a foreign idea to me because my personal level of ambition is unlimited.
How This Entrepreneur Went From Dead Broke to Mega Influencer in One Year

His business partner fled the country and racked up more than $120,000 in tickets on his credit card, selling them under the table and leaving Gaignard holding the bill.
