Live chat: Our columnists analyze LA.'s mayoral debate
Ali: Good Night, and Gustavo for Mayor. Ali : And that's it. We're done. This was not a win for Raman, so Bass comes out in front by default. Arellano : Both Bass and Raman struck out on the Dodger question at the end -- but did anyone of them get a hit that will advance their campaign? Someone grab Steve Garvey somewhere... Lopez: Gustavo for mayor. Arellano : And I take no notes before I ever talk! All extemporaneous, folks! Lopez: I kind of think L.A. really needs a leadership change.

Commentary: Bass vs. Raman: Here's who won the L.A. mayoral debate
Karen Bass and Nithya Raman faced off Tuesday night in a debate hosted by NBC4 and Telemundo52 in Universal City. It was the L.A. mayoral candidates' last head-to-head before the Nov. 3 election. Times columnists Lorraine Ali, Gustavo Arellano and Steve Lopez weigh in on the highlights and lowlights. Arellano: Raman had the line of the night at the very beginning, channeling — of all politicians — Ronald Reagan, one of the last people you'd think of as an Angeleno, even though he absolutely was.
Live chat: Our columnists analyze L.A.'s mayoral debate
Ali: The stakes are high for both contenders, yet I wonder how many Angelenos will be watching. It's surprising the number of otherwise politically aware folks who had no idea the debate was taking place tonight until I mentioned it. Then they were irked to find it airing on network TV: "Who still has cable?!" Apparently, venturing onto Telemundo or NBC's live feed is a bridge too far. But it shouldn't be. Raman is still a mystery to many, even though she's polling ahead.

Commentary: Public executions are the work of tyrants. Now, the U.S. is joining in
Iran. Afghanistan. North Korea. Somalia. And now, the United States. If Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth is to be believed, America will soon gain the dubious distinction of joining the only four countries on the globe that carry out executions in public. Hegseth said Thursday that he wanted the execution of convicted Fort Hood shooter, Army Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, to be available for public viewing. "It was a radical Islamist attack ...

The message should have been codified during the #MeToo 2010s after decades, if not centuries, of women reporting sexual assaults and authorities doing little to nothing to help them. Tangible proof of change was everywhere: Bill Cosby fell from grace. Harvey Weinstein wound up in jail. And though it took awhile, the Tate brothers are finally behind bars. Institutions would finally take claims of rape seriously, and young men would have a better understanding of consent and the consequences. Or not.
In 'Lanterns,' Poorna Jagannathan takes another turn as a TV baddie: The Manhunter | The Day
In 'Lanterns,' Poorna Jagannathan takes another turn as a TV baddie: The Manhunter Poorna Jagannathan has played everything from a ruthless gangster (“Deli Boys”) to an overbearing immigrant mom (“Never Have I Ever”). Now with HBO’s “Lanterns,” she adds an all-powerful galactic android to her acting resume. Her character’s identity was a secret for much of HBO’s DC Comics series until a reveal in Episode 4 that a rancher’s trophy wife, Zoe Macon (Jagannathan), was, in fact, the deadly Manhunter.

Commentary: Senator flubs gotcha moment by mixing up sports teams. A woman steps in to correct him Original
History was made this week on Capitol Hill when a female senator womansplained sports to a male senator, and surprisingly, the gender-shaming reversal did not cause the universe to collapse on itself. During a Judiciary Committee hearing Tuesday, MAGA's manhood cloak was breached when Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minnesota) revealed that Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-Missouri) had mixed up the names of basketball teams in an unsuccessful attempt to perjure former Special Counsel Jack Smith.
