Charli, played by Cara Wilson, and Xavier, coincidently played by Xavier Jones, have lots of Big Emotions that they let loose on each other, and sometimes those emotions can take an abrupt turn, which can be jarring. But it also makes sense because Jones’ character never had the opportunity to learn the art of self-control; his life didn’t afford him that luxury.

WAM Theatre Presents "The Light" By Loy A. Webb
Two Women. Multiple Truths. One Landmark Supreme Court Case. "ROE," by Lisa Loomer, is an historically sweeping play with a large ensemble cast that illuminates the history of one of the most polarizing social issues of the modern era, the Roe v. Wade, U.S. Supreme Court ruling that established a woman’s right to an abortion. The play provides a reminder of the human stories behind the debates and how hard we have to work to compassionately communicate with people with whom we may disagree.
BWW Review: THE LIGHT at Shotgun Players
The Light Written by Loy A. Webb Directed by Nailah Harper-Malveaux Shotgun Players 06 December 2020 Chicago-based Loy A. Webb's The Light is much more than a sweet proposal tale between African American couple Rashad (Kenny Scott) and Genesis (Leigh Rondon-Davis). Their two-year anniversary and gift giving evening is a jumping off point for a very heavy socio-political didactic on domestic violence and the plight of Black women.

Stageworthy: The Best of Stage 2019
Saw a little less shows than last year, and added a few concerts that I've included in the final tally. So 2019 I saw 153 different shows but 173 times (basically I did 20 repeats this year alone). (The full list of all the shows I saw is at the bottom of the post). This year I saw shows in Toronto and Stratford, London, NYC, Seattle, Los Angeles, and on a boat in the middle of the Caribbean. Any shows (same production version) I had seen in previous years are ineligible for this year's list.
The Hero We Need: A Review of The Real-Life Adventures of Jimmy de las Rosas at Free Street Theater
Imagine a world where the children that society deems valueless were actually chosen to be the precious salt of the earth. Where homeless youth were really pirates that had the power to hear and transport inner thoughts. Where immigrant children who the government would rather throw in cages had Hulk-like superhuman strength.
Worthy of Celebration: A Review of Mother of the Dark Water at MPAACT | Newcity Stage
As I watched “Mother of the Dark Water” presented by MPAACT, I thought of Ntozake Shange’s “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow is Enuf.” Lauren Wells, the director and deviser of this piece, has created a “For Colored Girls” for the children of those women originally impacted by Shange’s 1976 monumental work.
