Enhanced terahertz radiation generated by intense laser interaction with a two-layer thin solid target
A terahertz radiation enhancing scheme, in which a linearly polarized weakly relativistic laser pulse irradiates a target consisting of two parallel thin-solid layers with a certain gap, is proposed and studied by using two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. The radiation is known to be produced by laser-produced hot electrons via mechanisms such as coherent transition radiation at the target surfaces.
Beam loss detection based on generation of Cherenkov light in optical fibers in the CERN Linear Electron Accelerator for Research
Cherenkov optical beam loss monitors (oBLMs) based on optical fibers are a revolutionary achievement among the monitoring systems in particle accelerators. Due to the nature of the Cherenkov phenomenon and the intrinsic characteristics of optical fibers, the photon production and fiber light transmission need to be studied to deduce the total amount of Cherenkov photons detected by the photosensors attached at the end of the system.

Buoyancy-Induced Convection Driven by Frontal Polymerization
Abstract In this Letter, we study the interaction between a self-sustaining exothermic reaction front propagating in a direction perpendicular to that of gravity and the buoyancy-driven convective flow during frontal polymerization (FP) of a low-viscosity monomer resin. As the polymerization front transforms the liquid monomer into the solid polymer, the large thermal gradients associated with the propagating front sustain a natural convection of the fluid ahead of the front.
Are Women Overinvesting in Education? Evidence from the Medical Profession
Recent literature finds that women earn significantly lower returns to professional degrees. Does this render these degrees poor investments for women? We compare physicians to physician assistants, a similar profession with lower wages and training costs, mitigating some selection issues. The median female (but not male) primary-care physician would have been financially better off becoming a physician assistant.

Nursing home staff networks and COVID-19
Significance Nursing homes account for 40% of US COVID-related fatalities as of August 31, highlighting the urgent need to reduce SARS-CoV-2 transmission routes in these facilities. Our large-scale analysis of smartphone location data reports half a million individuals entering a nursing home following the March 13 federal ban on visitors. With 5.1% of these individuals entering two or more facilities, a nursing home snapshot network emerges.

Introduction Eosinophilic gastrointestinal disease (EGID) is a collection of rare infiltrative diseases in which eosinophils invade the digestive tract and can manifest common symptoms. Case description A 75-year-old female with chronic gastric reflux was admitted following three months of intractable nausea and abdominal pain. Outpatient labs demonstrated elevated transaminases and peripheral eosinophilia, with the AEC reaching 1800.

Introduction In Lymphoid Hypereosinophilic Syndrome (LHES) an aberrant clonal T cell population drives a persistent eosinophilia via Th2 cytokine production. Clinical manifestations classically include an intensely pruritic rash. Janus Kinases Inhibitors (JAKi) such as tofacitinib have recently emerged as a therapeutic for inflammatory diseases and has unique anti-itch properties. We present a case of LHES with cutaneous involvement successfully managed with tofacitinib.

Background: Tong–Xie–Yao–Fang (TXYF) is a Chinese herbal formula for treating chronic diarrhoea accompanied by abdominal pain. The results were inconsistent in previous trials examining its effect. Aim: To study the efficacy of TXYF granules for treating diarrhoea–predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS–D). Methods: We performed a double–blind, placebo–controlled randomised trial and enrolled 160 participants with IBS–D.
