Like many western trans women that grew up after or during the 1990s, I have a complicated personal relationship with anime. I started out by watching butchered English dubs of shows like Pokémon, Sailor Moon, and Dragon Ball Z whichwere played on children’s morning television programs constantly during the 90s, apparently because the cost of licensing them was very cheap in international markets.
