The real reason Trump always chickens out
2 days ago Democrats are ecstatic after flipping a Republican-controlled legislative seat in a right-leaning, Palm Beach, Florida-anchored district that includes Mar-a-Lago, President Donald Trump's home turf. "If Democrats can win in Trump’s own backyard, we can win anywhere. From now until November, …

Journalist from Andrew's infamous 'Newsnight' interview questions Charles' response to his arrest
King Charles III addressed the stunning arrest of his brother Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, the monarch chose his words carefully. But something the king said — two words in particular — raised fresh questions from Emily Maitlis, the journalist who famously confronted the former Prince Andrew about his ties to predator Jeffrey Epstein in a 2019 interview for the BBC's Newsnight.Speaking on a recent episode of her "The News Agents" podcast, Maitlis focused on a phrase the king used in a written...
Should We Have Seen Trump's Victory Coming?
Emily Maitlis pores over the telltale signs that the Democrats were doomed all along. On election night, November 2024 – the night that will bring Trump back to power with a thumping victory, confounding critics, commentators and pollsters – I will find my memory dragging me back to an evening I spent in an airport bar in Georgia. It is exactly a year earlier and we have struck up a conversation with a bunch of local lads – all late teens or mid twenties.
A Very Royal Scandal
Velká Británie, 2024, 3 h (Minutáž: 59–61 min) Hrají: Michael Sheen , Ruth Wilson , Ian Hughes , Eanna Hardwicke , Joanna Scanlan , Claire Rushbrook , Nicholas Burns , Sam Troughton , Clare Calbraith , Lydia Leonard, Alex Jennings (více) (další profese)
‘A Very Royal Scandal’ premiere review
First look at A Very Royal Scandal Arriving in the chandeliered lower chamber of the Ham Yard Hotel, where I have attended a slew of preview screenings in the past, I sensed this was a far more high-stakes affair. A blue ‘red’ carpet had been laid on for the press to snap assorted luminaries implicated in A Very Royal Scandal (available to stream from 19 September) as they posed for the cameras.

Emily Maitlis interviews Ruth Wilson about playing her on screen: ‘I was scared of playing you’
I open the email that has just popped into my inbox. It’s from Ruth Wilson, movie star, actor, MBE. The subheading is “Micro Questions”. And the first five “micros” go as follows: Are you a swearer? Are you a sleeper? What keeps you awake? What is in your handbag? Do you cook? My answers are: Yes. Light. Everything. Everything. Yes. Over the course of our next emails I will expand. I will tell her all the things she could possibly want to know about me.

Voices: Andrew Tate vs the BBC: Who is on trial here?
I have no idea about the process that led up to the BBC approaching Andrew Tate for an interview. Or the reason Andrew Tate eventually agreed to do it – he says he relented after “months of begging”. But I do have some idea of how the interviewer Lucy Williamson might have felt on hearing it was game on. The intense elation (”a world exclusive with a renowned dickhead!”) quickly followed by the utter panic (”am I up to this? What tricks is he going to play?

Emily Maitlis felt ‘really sick’ ahead of Newsnight interview with Andrew
Following the Newsnight broadcast in November 2019 and the furore over Andrew’s friendship with Epstein, the duke stepped down from public life. In newly released clips for the two-part programme Andrew: The Problem Prince, Maitlis said: “I arrived at the palace with my huge bag. I ended up wearing this sort of military-style jacket.
The Trump I met loves combat - but it could be his downfall
Donald Trump: All American Billionaire - BBC The first time I ever met Donald Trump, it was in a tower with his name on the top. He was a New York businessman – THE New York businessman– who loved his letters on anything he owned. He would accrue many titles over the coming years. The next time we met – in a hotel ballroom – it was 2015 and I was chasing him across the America he wished to Make Great Again. On the TV networks, he was known as Candidate Trump.
Voices: Stormy Daniels is smart, fierce, articulate – and she’s about to bring down Trump’s house of cards - NewsBreak
It was an inauspicious start to Donald Trump ’s defence. The former president making a fat-fingered spelling mistake on his own social media , screaming in his trademark block capitals on Truth Social that he had been “INDICATED” by “Radical Left Monsters” . He hadn’t (unless that’s some kind of QAnon cult shorthand), but he has been “indicted”. British readers start here: that means he will face criminal charges. The first US president in history. So what happens now?
Emily Maitlis: I pay my licence fee because I want the editorial independence
During the online discussion, which was chaired by former head of news and current affairs at Channel 4 Dorothy Byrne, Maitlis said: “I think there has been this mistaken idea that… if you keep the government of the day happy, you’ll get more money in the licence fee. “If you keep the press onside, you’ll get nice reviews. “I think we’ve been through enough, we’ve had enough decades and enough rounds of the licence fee payments and all the rest of it to know that isn’t right.
Ear Candy: The News Agents
In August, former BBC heavyweights Emily Maitlis, Jon Sopel and Lewis Goodall stepped into the podcast ring with The News Agents, promising a new type of daily news show. In a clear statement of intent, a recording of Maitlis’s headline-making MacTaggart Lecture, in which she decried the BBC’s version of “impartiality”, was published under the title before the launch proper. In other words, this time it’s partial.

Emily Maitlis’s diary: my new podcast move is terrifying and exhilarating in one gulp

Prince Andrew's statement seems to contradict answers he gave me - Emily Maitlis Original
By Emily Maitlis BBC Newsnight It is an image now burned into my brain: Prince Andrew, in the eaves of Buckingham Palace, trying to explain to me why he thought a Newsnight interview might be a good idea. He wanted to get across his innocence. He wanted to tell me he had never met the woman who was accusing him of sex trafficking. He wanted to try and prove that it hadn't been him in the now-infamous photograph in Ghislaine Maxwell's house - an arm flung around Virginia Giuffre.
Prince Andrew: Emily Maitlis on the TV interview that is 'critical' to sexual assault case
By Emily Maitlis BBC Newsnight Image caption, Prince Andrew was interviewed by BBC Newsnight's Emily Maitlis in 2019 It is more than two years since I sat down with Prince Andrew in a Buckingham Palace ballroom and posed questions that seemed almost too surreal to ask. It is two years since the world heard his defence - about a birthday party in Woking, a trip to Pizza Express, and his inability to sweat - and shook a collective head, trying to work out what any of it meant.

The War on Social Media: Is Trump the biggest Social Justice Warrior of them all?
Adam Tugwell May 28, 2020 Fake news is a phrase that we have come to associate with Donald Trump in the same way that we do a machine that Hoovers with Dyson. I’ll bet you can hear him saying it right now. With the news that Trump is about to take the Social Media Companies to task – now that Twitter has created a button to flag fake news, the threat that the President of the United States could pull the rug from under the new media age is something that should concern us all.

The Acosta affair: An unpopular opinion
Media playback is unsupported on your device Media captionDonald Trump and CNN's Acosta clash We were on our way to the White House Press press conference yesterday morning - when we got redirected. Disappointed at the time, I am now relieved we were. There is only one memorable moment from that press conference - and that was a one minute 20 seconds fight between the president and the CNN White House Correspondent Jim Acosta. No other question really got a look in.
US mid-term elections 2018: The races to watch
Popular wisdom suggests that Donald Trump expects to lose the House of Representatives, although Democrats don't believe anything is in the bag. In the lower chamber there are about 30-35 tight races right across the country. The key may be the liberal, affluent voters - if they vote for the economy they back Republicans. If they vote for their social values, they go Democrat. That's a big if which decides who controls one house of congress.

Mid-term matters (with apologies to Alan Partridge)
The political noise never quite stops in Washington DC - but this morning - one day before Americans head to the polls - it is at fever pitch. The heavens have opened and rush hour cars are gridlocked, which is good news for Conservative talk show hosts Mary and Vince who we're with for their Morning Call in. They're quoting Republican Senator Lindsay Graham who has begun the day with the words 'if you're Republican and you're not coming out to vote then you're legally dead'.
Hickory smoke, suburban moms, and gay Trump supporters
In the neat reductionism of electoral stereotypes, the one everyone is talking about for the 2018 midterms is ‘Suburban Mom’. She’s college-educated, affluent, perhaps fiscally-conservative but she finds Donald Trump personally a bit cringe. She holds the key to some really critical races. The problem is – no one knows quite how she’ll vote. In 2016, it was easy to spot the Trump fans. They wore MAGA hats and ‘Deplorable Me’ T-shirts. They chanted things about swamps and prison.
Brazil faces an existential threat - but it is not too late to fight back
The election of Jair Bolsonaro is the most significant event in Brazilian history since the fall of the military dictatorship. The country’s democracy now faces an existential threat. Over the next few years, Brazilians are going to be fighting for the very survival of liberal democracy, the political system that aims to afford its citizens both a modicum of individual liberty and a degree of collective self-determination.

Media playback is unsupported on your device Media captionChippendales dancer Ryan Kelsey says he doesn't feel objectified The Chippendales describe their work as "half show, half party" - a male revue that in their words "reveals a little more". That may be an understatement. I sat through the first half an hour of the Las Vegas show and saw bare backsides, simulated sex and a game too strange to describe using a banana as a prop.
