Music, Violence, and the Ritual That AI Cannot Replace
Several weeks ago, Andy Hall, the Grammy-award winning dobro player and member of bluegrass jam band The Infamous Stringdusters, went on Instagram to explain “what it’s like to be replaced by AI.” While listening to a song on which he had been asked to overdub, he said, he discovered that it already had “the most . . . incredible beautiful dobro that I’ve ever heard in my life.” Thinking there must be a mistake, Hall emailed the songwriter: “I guess . . . you got somebody to play . . .

Marc Ribot: Solo Guitar Improvisations (USA)

Guitarist Mark Ribot shows his way with words in 'Unstrung'
“Unstrung” is proof that the iconoclast Marc Ribot has a way with words commensurate with his guitar virtuosity. An eminence on the New York scene for decades, Ribot has collected what he subtitles the “rants and stories of a noise guitarist.” This flotilla rocks even when it’s distasteful, and virtually all the work is subversive, though some pieces are more persuasive than others.
The Rolling Stones: Tattoo You (Clear Vinyl) (2 LPs)
Marc Ribot Makes the Case for Loud Music
Hi. My name is Marc. I’m a guitarist who points extremely loud amplifiers directly at his head. Very often. Sometimes as often as 200 nights a year for the past 45 years. Audiologists say this could make one’s ears howl, create an uncomfortable sensation of density in one’s head, and eventually make it impossible to hear human conversation. Yet I persist . . . Why?

Unstrung: Rants and Stories of a Noise Guitarist
“A slim yet powerful book in which Marc Ribot blends bits of memoir with strange little fictions, many of which are based on his own life and career.” —Wall Street Journal “Ribot . . . produced a book that is much like his musical output: difficult to categorize but fascinating and engaging.” —Inside Hook “Unstrung has all the honesty, original angles, beauty, and clangor found in Marc Ribot’s playing.
Marc Ribot Talks Respecting Artists’ Rights
I’m a musician, not a lawyer. But for the past year, I’ve been asking my friends to sign letters with language like this: I am opposed to the efforts from technology corporations to exploit works that they identify as “orphan works” online with no compensation to the creators. I oppose the fair use exception being applied to the mass digitization of orphan works. Fair use is too broad an exception for this activity.
The Ah (Star Rover, Delicate Steve, David Byrne, drummer Jeremy Gustin) premieres “I Changed Colour” video from forthcoming Common Bliss cassette
Anyone who has heard Jeremy Gustin’s drum work with the (largely) instrumental acts Delicate Steve and with his own Star Rover project knows he can hit kits like a ton of bricks…if each brick in that ton was made of ten brick-like sticks: SKRONK, SPLAP, SPLORK AAHT AAHHT BLOOOT, SPUTZ SPITZA CHUKKUNK CLUNK, TING KATOONG PLAPF, UNKLIK ULK, ZZIP, SHMUZORFT, POFFISSS… (thanks MAD Magazine!).
Marc Ribot - “Bella Ciao (Goodbye Beautiful)” ft. Tom Waits
Chameleonic and iconoclastic guitarist Marc Ribot is releasing a new album on Friday called Songs of Resistance 1948 – 2018. As the title implies, the LP is a collection of Ribot’s interpretations of twentieth century protest songs, mixed with a few original compositions. The record features lots off special guests, and today Ribot has released an advance track featuring one of his most famous collaborators: Tom Waits. It’s the first new recording by Waits in two years.

Quieter, the new album by Carla Bozulich is out now on Constellation records and you can stream it in its entirety above. She kindly wrote us this guide to accompany the stream. "This is the most honest work I ever done. Andrea Belfi is at his usual psychic, master drumming—here holding back—generous. Jhno’s duduk brought in my blood, my Armenian family—the inevitable travel (the running), the blood that pours, still. The point when you know it is nothing matters more than anything else—damn little.
