New graphic novels look at vampire love, goblins and Mark Twain’s Jim, who is having a big year
First published in 2008 and now getting a long-overdue reissue, Abel and Soria’s “Life Sucks” is based on an old premise: boy likes girl who likes boy though not enough to break up with her creep boyfriend. But the authors juice the story with a bloody twist: The girl, Rosa, is a vampire-worshipping goth who’s unaware that the boy, Dave, is undead. The story is grounded in Dave’s workaday existence.

Gumbo is Goode: Lakota West runs over West Clermont
WEST CHESTER — Playing with a packed grandstand at home for the first time in two years, the Lakota West Firebirds rebounded from a season-opening loss with three first quarter touchdowns en route to a 45-7victory over the West Clermont Wolves. Cameron Goode scored on three first half touchdowns of 24, 20 and 7 yards to lead the Firebirds — adding another 45 yards receiving. “It really came out of the offensive line settling the ends,” Goode said.

Adversity is A Gift, Embrace it
In this dream, I was being chased by something that paralyzed me with fear. Try as I may, I could never see what I was running from. I hadn’t had this dream in decades until it revisited me one fateful night while I was in the military preparing for deployment. The following morning, my worst nightmare from childhood had come to pass. From the rigors of military training, I had inadvertently suffered a severe spinal injury that left me immobile from the neck down. My life was turned upside down.
Game Guide: 'Overwatch' is the new kid on the block
“Overwatch” succeeded in breaking through the crowded field of first person shooters. By including a diverse base of characters, simple gaming mechanics and a deep level of complexity, developer Blizzard has a hit on its hands. From the incredibly successful open-beta to the lovable characters in the game trailers, “Overwatch” oozes with style and precision.
Game Guide: 'Tales from the Borderlands' a fun and riveting story
To celebrate the physical release of “Tales from the Borderlands: A TellTale Game Series,” I happily purchased the game that I sadly missed when it was first released back in 2014. Now that all five episodes are wrapped into one buyable disc, adults who enjoy interactive stories and the “Borderlands” games should not miss this. Like other TellTale games, this one has wonderful storytelling and humorous moments.
Game Guide: Comic artist lives and breathes pinball
Ryan Claytor, professor at Michigan State University, is known for enthusiastic teaching, thoughtful comics and his vast contributions to the pinball community. His claim to fame was his first design created for Pinball at the Zoo, a yearly arcade and pinball convention held in Kalamazoo. Claytor’s designs are fun and full of mirth. Interviewing him about his pinball history and pinball shirts for PATZ was quite the delight.
Game Guide: 'Enter the Gungeon' a budget shooter paradise
“Enter the Gungeon” is one of those surprise games that comes from nowhere. For an old shooter fan like myself, it enthralled me for countless hours. By combining rogue-like dungeon crawling, “bullet hell” shooters and a humorous tone, “Enter the Gungeon” is a blast. You begin as one of four characters who are trying to get to the weapon at the bottom of the “Gungeon.” Its power is the ability to shoot the past to change the future.
Game Guide: 'Salt and Sanctuary' difficult and satisfying side-scroller
In the past week, many have made comparisons of “Salt and Sanctuary” to “Dark Souls” — and that is a compliment. On the surface, most of this is true, but it sells short this wonderful hack-and-slash, role-playing action game. Developers of the independent game smash hit “the dishwasher” are back with this satisfying, bloody beat-em up. Evil creatures and magical monsters stand in your way as you try to rescue a kidnapped damsel whose freedom could prevent a war.
Game Guide: 'KenKen Classic' exponentially better than Sudoku
As a gamer and a math teacher, I am often asked which game is the most educational and entertaining. Many are surprised to hear that Sudoku is not my first choice. Hands down, KenKen puzzles are my favorite way to waste time while exercising my brain. “KENKEN Classic” is a fantastic game for the iPhone or Android device that will push your logic skills as far as you want to go. To the outsider, playing KenKen looks similar to Sudoku since you can use only one number once in any row or column.
Game Guide: 'Mega Man Legacy Collection' platforming perfection
This last week has been fantastic for old games to come back to life. Not only did we see a new HD remake of “The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess,” but Nintendo 3DS owners got another gift from the past: “Mega Man Legacy Collection.” For one price, the six original “Mega Man” games are restored beautifully for your HD-TV or Nintendo 3DS. With pixel-perfect jumping, challenge and grade-level design, this game collection is a must-own for any “Mega Man” fan.
Game Guide: 'Devil Daggers' perfect for old-school 'Doom' fans
If you ask any fan of the original “Doom” what they liked best about it, I would suspect it would be those moments when you were put in a small area with a ridiculous amount of monsters and had to fight your way out. That instant when the odds are overwhelmingly against you is the essence of the retro first-person shooter, “Devil Daggers.” Although there is no story to speak of, imagine yourself placed into a dark abyss.
Game Guide: 'Witness' a calm meditation
“The Witness” is a calm meditation on puzzle gaming. By just drawing a line, you have the ability to solve any puzzle. However, this game takes the simplest concept and builds on it in ways I could have never imagined. I was drawn to “The Witness” because it was created by Jonathan Blow who made the groundbreaking puzzle game "Braid." My friends and I have played “Braid” religiously until we got to the amazing ending. I expected no less from Blow and I was not disappointed.
Game Guide: 'Resident Evil Zero' another excellent remake
Whenever Capcom sends me information about another HD remake of a “Resident Evil” game, my heart skips a beat. Their long history of making great conversions of this classic franchise excites me to no end. In January, "Resident Evil Zero" hit the shelves and the digital stores with an economical trip down memory lane. If you are a fan and missed this adventure the first time around, I strongly urge you to take a look.
Game Guide: 'Tharsis' is a great board game on your PC or PS4
We have all heard that you should never judge a book by its cover. Likewise, you should never judge a game by screen images. Behind the static images of “Tharsis,” there is a punishingly difficult but satisfying board game disguised as a video game. Either alone or with a group of intelligent friends, “Tharsis” is a fun game if you enjoy rolling dice and challenging gameplay. You control four people on an expedition to Mars, when your ship is critically damaged by a meteor.
Game Guide: 'Amplitude' has style, passable soundtrack
The second Game Guide article I ever wrote for the Battle Creek Enquirer back in 2008 was about one of my favorite PlayStation 2 games, “Amplitude.” Its pre-“Guitar Hero” gameplay and dynamic soundtrack made it a wonderful game for any music lover. I was so happy to see “Amplitude” remade for the PlayStation 4, it was an easy day-one purchase for me. Unfortunately, the lack of licensed songs makes the experience less exciting.
Game Guide: 'Puzzle Quest' meets 'Magic' and works
On the phone, there are plenty of “match-three” games with free-to-play mechanics to choke the App Store. I avoided them until I heard there was a “Magic: The Gathering - Puzzle Quest” edition and I was immediately sucked in. Over the years, the “Puzzle Quest” games have been some of my favorite games to review when I played them on the Nintendo DS.
Game Guide Top 10 of 2015: Console gaming spectacular
For current-generation consoles and PC gamers, 2015 was a great year. It had major blockbusters, indie gaming surprises along with a slew of sequels. My “Top 10” are those games that make me happy and are all worth playing in 2016, if you have not done so already. 1. “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt”: Fantastic in most every way, this open-world adventure game is rich in detail and deep in lore.
Game wars: 'Black Ops III' beats 'Battlefront'
Two of the biggest shooters this year squared off in November to see who would reign supreme: “Call of Duty: Black Ops III" versus “Star Wars: Battlefront.” These multiplayer shooters both received a lot of hype from an open-beta that ran this summer. Although fans may be solidly in their own camps about which game is better, it is easy for me to declare a victor. Gameplay: “Battlefront” and “Black Ops” are nearly equal in this category.
Game Guide: 'Downwell' is iPhone game of the year
“Downwell” was a game I purchased for my iPhone because I was bored one day. It received some positive buzz and critical acclaim and I have been playing it daily ever since. Without a doubt, this is my iPhone game of the year. Even though you can play it on PC or an iPad, “Downwell” plays best in quick, action-packed moments that travel with you wherever you go. As the title suggests, “Downwell” starts with you jumping into a well.
Game Guide: 'Just Dance 2016' hits, 'Disney Party' misses
With the release of two “Just Dance” games in one week, Ubisoft is hoping to get some attention before they are drowned out by the deluge of games this holiday season. Proving once again that the formula cannot fail, “Just Dance 2016” is a solid and innovative entry in its long-running franchise. The “Just Dance” games follow a simple formula: Match the person on the screen while holding a remote in your hand or using the motion-sensing device on your console.
Game Guide: 'Yoshi's Woolly World' is eye-candy platforming
“Yoshi's Woolly World” proves once again that Nintendo has not lost its touch. This sugary-sweet side-scrolling platform adventure game repeats a lot of what makes the “Yoshi Island” games so great. For WiiU owners and fans of the series, this is another must-buy. Like the excellent “Kirby’s Epic Yarn” game, “Woolly World” is filled with yarn, fabric and cloth-themed levels.
Game Guide: 'Broforce' pays homage to '80s action movies
The side-scrolling, violent video game “Broforce” is a bloody love letter to '80s action movies. With twitch-quick action and pixelated mayhem, “Broforce” was officially released last week to the public on PC. In a brilliant move, investors and interested gamers could have loaded the game more than a year ago in early-release "alpha" release. It was a good bet that paid off for everyone.
