Dr. Esosa Odigie-Okonhas been recognized as a Fellow of the Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (FSCMR). The designation recognizes physicians, scientists, and technologists for their dedication to cardiac magnetic resonance imaging. An advanced cardiac imaging cardiologist, Odigie-Okon is an assistant clinical professor in cardiovascular medicine and radiology, medical director of Cardiac MRI, and co-director of Cardiac CT at The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB).

New study sheds light on why immunity to scrub typhus fades — and why some cases turn severe

Scrub typhus, caused by the bacterium Orientia tsutsugamushi, affects an estimated million people globally each year, primarily across parts of Asia and the Pacific. Although the illness is treatable with antibiotics, it can become severe or even fatal if not diagnosed early. One of its most puzzling features is the possibility of reinfection, suggesting that the body’s immune protection does not last.

UTMB scientists track breakthrough single-dose vaccines for Andes hantavirus strain

In a study published in The Lancet, researchers at The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) report the development of new vaccines that, in animal testing, provided full protection against the deadly Andes hantavirus after a single dose. Alexander Bukreyev, PhD, head of the Laboratory of Viral Pathogenesis and Vaccine Development at UTMB, said that with backing from the National Institutes of Health, UTMB is working to fast-track these single-dose vaccines into human clinical trials.
