Pulling the Trigger on Physical Silver
I have always wanted to own physical gold and silver. I’m not a survivalist. I won’t store my precious metals with gasoline, guns, and baked beans. And I don’t expect to have to trade them in some post-apocalyptic world for my neighbour’s two-headed goat. So what’s the point? Do I really need to own physical gold and siIver? Can’t I just own exchange-traded funds GLD and SLV that hold bullion bars in a vault for me? I could and sometimes do.
Go Anywhere vs. the Crowd
South Africa, Malaysia, Emerging Market Bonds, Gold, British Pound, Small Cap Japan. Does your portfolio look anything like that? Those are just six of the 32 ETFs recommended (as of October 21) on the ETF Pro Plus product list of Hedgeye Risk Management. There are also six ETFs on the short side, including Mexico, Denmark, and U.S. Retail. The list of long ideas in ETF Pro Plus is a replica of Keith McCullough’s holdings in his long-only portfolio or “Mucker Family Office”.
Warning: Don’t Go Rogue from the Hedgeye Process
The first rule of the Hedgeye investing process is preserve and protect your capital. The innovative risk management system created by Founder and CEO Keith McCullough is designed to prevent major drawdowns. Why wear a 75 percent plunge in a stock such as Meta between August 2021 and October 2022 if you can limit your loss to five or six per cent? I witnessed both sides of that scenario close up.
Overtrading & Procrastination
Every couple of months, my wife drops a large envelope on my desk like the one in the picture above. Inside is a fat stack of white paper sheets, the latest a half an inch thick, comprising dozens of approval forms for employee transactions. I have to sign off on trades in my personal account, as does she, for compliance reasons, because she manages my retirement account as a registered portfolio manager and CEO of a boutique investment company.
“Mandelbrot Will Blow Your Mind”
One of the best things an investor can do when learning the Hedgeye Risk Management investing process is to read the books by “financial market founding fathers” that Keith McCullough recommends because he owes them a debt of gratitude and they are essential pillars in his approach to investing.
If You Don’t Want to Play That Way, Don’t Play That Way
Michael Jordan in The Last Dance Keith McCullough often quotes the headline above from Michael Jordan in the brilliant documentary The Last Dance about the Chicago Bulls’ last championship season. The basketball legend was addressing the claim that he was a tyrant with his teammates. Jordan said, in part, those were comments from people who “never won anything.” It’s well known that Jordan is an intense competitor.

Hi, I'm Mark Bunting and I'm Hooked on Hedgeye.
By hooked, I mean enjoying something very much, as the Oxford Dictionary describes the word in an informal sense. That something is Hedgeye Risk Management, and the innovative investment process created by its founder and Chief Executive Officer Keith McCullough. I don’t need or want an intervention, not because I’m delusional or stubborn.

Investigating the potential of X shredding for mouse genetic biocontrol
Abstract CRISPR-Cas9 technology has facilitated development of strategies that can potentially provide more humane and effective methods to control invasive vertebrate species, such as mice. One promising strategy is X-chromosome shredding which aims to bias offspring towards males, resulting in a gradual and unsustainable decline of females. This method has been explored in insects with encouraging results.
RH Has Big 2024 in Store for Patient Investors.
This company is the “best idea in retail hands down” over a six-month, one-year, three-year, and five-year time duration. “No company has more torque in their model.” And the Chairman and CEO, who is “very macro aware and pragmatic”, had a dramatic change in tone in the company’s earnings conference call during which he outlined a “major inflection” coming for the luxury home furnishings retailer in 2024 while acknowledging a still negative macro environment.
These Stocks Could Rise Three-to-Five Times.
Unless you’ve taken a six month holiday off the grid, you know that artificial intelligence has become an intense area of interest. Although, judging by the Google Search Trends chart above, the mania appears to have peaked for now. However, many portfolio managers and investors in general are thinking long and hard about how to benefit from this massive shift in technology which is changing the way we live in ways we can barely comprehend at the moment.
Have Programmed Trading & Investor Behaviour Irrevocably Changed the Investing Game?
There are billions and billions of dollars at work under the hood of the stock market every trading day that few people see or consider. From so-called target date funds that systematically invest money for their clients’ 401k’s, the U.S. equivalent of RRSPs, to Commodity Trading Advisors (CTAs), who deploy derivatives to trade using momentum, to Volatility Control Funds, which attempt to smooth out market volatility using systematic, programmed strategies.
Three New Videos: Economic Cycle Bottomed? Why This Market is Like '87 & '98-'99; This Stock Could Have Meta-Like Resurgence.
John O’Connell, Chairman, CEO & CIO, Davis Rea Investment Counsel, and Don Ritchie, President, discuss why the economic cycle may have bottomed and a recession is far from a sure thing. In fact, the economy may be entering a period of steady growth that is not too hot or too cold but just right. Yes, the fabled Goldilocks economy that would provide the soft landing that many market players are forecasting and hoping for. Or a “rolling expansion” as Ed Yardeni of Yardeni Research likes to call it.
Manager Who Called New Bull Market Still Bullish
Part One above. Watch Part Two… ** Got questions? Such as are the economy and the stock market entering into a goldilocks environment? We’ve got answers from two seasoned pros who love the game and spend their working days absorbing information and thinking about ways to protect client capital and about which large cap businesses can thrive in any kind of market.
Five Reasons Economy Has Shifted to "Rolling Expansion."
When we interviewed Dr. Ed Yardeni in late October of 2022, he told us he believed there were “tremendous opportunities” in the stock market despite what he called a “rolling recession” in the U.S. Now, the President of Yardeni Research believes that rolling recession may be turning into a “rolling expansion” based on some of the economic data released this past week. Since Yardeni’s comments during our conversation about nine months ago, the S&P 500 is higher by nearly 20%.

Stock Idea to Capitalize on "Enormous Amounts" of Infrastructure Spending

This is a UK-based company with a significant amount of business in the U.S., and will soon have its primary stock listing on the New York Stock Exchange.
"We Have 25% Cash and Have Hedged 25-30% of Our Portfolio."
More from the leadership team at Davis Rea Investment Counsel, in Part Two of our latest conversation. This time, John O’Connell and Don Ritchie provide a glimpse into how they’re managing through the current market environment by holding more cash than usual and, to avoid triggering capital gains, putting on some hedging strategies. Other topics include hedge fund activity, the rising odds of a slowdown, and why Blackstone’s Momentum Fund may be late to the party by buying technology stocks.
"The Glass is Half-Full for the Companies We Own."
Glass half-full, glass half-empty. Those are generally the two most prominent types of investors. But who has done the work, assessed the data and made informed decisions about the companies they’ve invested in? And who is jumping from headline to headline and/or on the lookout for views that will confirm their bias, either positive or negative.

by | Apr 9, 2023 | Big Picture, Canada, Feature, Financial Planning, Financials, Interviews, Investing, Stocks, Top Ideas, United States, Videos Things are moving more quickly than usual in financial markets these days. The mini-banking crisis in the U.S. combined with uncertainty about the economy, interest rates, inflation, corporate earnings and a myriad of other factors requires calm and reasoned thinking to determine what investors should do, if anything.

Is the "Tech Safety Trade" a False Narrative?
by | Mar 31, 2023 | Big Picture, Canada, E-Commerce, Feature, Financial Planning, Financials, Interviews, Investing, Stocks, Technology, Top Ideas Part two of our conversation with John O’Connell and Don Ritchie of Davis Rea Investment Counsel. A lot of investors have been piling into MAGMA stocks amid the simmering banking crisis in the U.S. on the idea that Microsoft, Apple, Google, Meta and Amazon are safe to hide out in while the economy and profits slow. Maybe.
Top Five Ranked Warren Buffett Stocks
Warren Buffett doesn’t lack for interest from the general public and media. Hundreds of books, for example, have been written about the multi-billionaire investing legend from Omaha. Still sharp at 92, along with his fellow nonagenarian colleague, Charlie Munger, a sprightly 99, Buffett and his favourite investments are still followed closely.
Newmont's $17 Billion Newcrest Deal Could Signal Multi-Year Bull for Gold. Here's Why.
Newmont Corporation’s $17 billion offer to buy Newcrest Mining of Australia is a continuation of a consolidation trend in the gold sector that started more than two years ago. There were nearly $1 billion in gold company transactions in 2021 and 2022 after eight years of mostly negative aggregate mergers and acquisition activity. It’s the size of the Newmont deal that’s important as large scale M&A has preceded prior multi-year bull market runs for gold and related companies.

Contrarian Wins Our 2022 Stock Picking Challenge with Gain of 40%

How to Profit from Private Chick-fil-A's Market-Leading Growth
Chick-fil-A makes more in annual sales per restaurant being open six days a week than McDonald’s does in seven. That’s according to Hedgeye Risk Management Consumer Staples analyst Daniel Biolsi. Most people wouldn’t know that fact because Chick-fil-A is a private company and always has been since its founding by the late Samuel Truett Cathy in 1967. Chick-fil-A is also one of the fastest-growing quick service restaurant chains in the U.S. with the highest customer satisfaction ratings.
Look to Value, Bank & Energy Stocks to Weather a Mild Recession
NECESSARY CONDITIONS FOR A TROUGH For equity markets to bottom, certain conditions generally need to be in place: Cheap valuations Depressed sentiment Cautious positioning A sense that the worst is over in terms of economic activity, inflation, and interest rates. Two of those conditions appear to be in place, but they may not be sufficient, on their own, to trigger a sustainable rebound: Equity valuations have already plunged on the back of this year’s surge in real yields.
Ponzi to Bre-X, Madoff to FTX. Why Frauds Will Always Happen & How Investors Can Protect Themselves.
by | Nov 29, 2022 | Big Picture, Canada, Feature, Financial Planning, Interviews, Investing, Videos You may or may not have been caught up in the FTX cryptocurrency implosion but what’s certain is that financial frauds are as old as time and they’ll never be stamped out. Every go-go era, once the tide goes out, has its share of frauds, each one similar but different to ones that have gone before. The perpetrators even have the same smirks. See Charles Ponzi and Sam Bankman-Fried, as an example.

Five Copper Stocks for the Green Power Shift
There’s going to a deficit of copper globally by 2030 of about eight million tonnes, according to a recent study. One CEO told me recently there’s currently only about five days of copper supply on the global market. This is as the world inexorably transitions to renewable energy and electric vehicles.
Five Best Dow Dividend Stocks to Buy Now
How about that monstrous rally for the Dow Industrials last Thursday amid strong moves among all of the major North American stock indices? Was that a classic bear market rally triggered by many investors covering their short positions and others giving in – yet again – to a fear of missing out? Maybe. But the big gains hi-lighted some of the stocks within the Dow 30, especially the dividend payers. I sat in on a David Rosenberg speech this past week at a conference.

"Roaring '20s" Still Possible After "Mother of All Melt-ups" & Meltdown
Ed Yardeni has drawn fascinating comparisons between the technological innovation during the 1920s and the cutting edge technology trends of this decade. Find out from the President of Yardeni Research why another “roaring ’20s” decade is still possible for stocks despite the epic “everything” bubble that burst late last year and the subsequent decline we’ve seen since. "Lots of Things Breaking" Globally
Dr. Ed Yardeni considers himself an “optimist at heart.” But that doesn’t mean the President of Yardeni Research is wishing the U.S. Federal Reserve will “pivot” away from its interest rate tightening cycle. And it doesn’t mean Yardeni is hoping for the major stock indices to bottom. Instead, he’s tracking the data. Yes, he believes there are some “tremendous opportunities” for long-term investors and that a “roaring ’20s” decade is still possible after the “Mother of All Melt-ups.

Fed Pivot is a "BS Narrative"
Stop. Just stop. The narrative that the Federal Reserve is going to “pivot” and slow its inflation-fighting interest rate tightening cycle or pause or even start cutting rates soon is not going to happen. For one, the U.S. two-year yield, an indicator of expected near-term interest rates, is higher by about 30 basis points in the five days since various market players and many in the financial media revived the dovish Fed pivot story.
