The imperative to counter fossil fuel industry disinformation for public health
As the Los Angeles fires scorched communities and choked the skies, the destructive forces of climate-driven disasters became hard to deny. Yet, amidst the devastation—scorched neighbourhoods, overwhelmed hospitals,1 toxic air,2 and mounting public health risks—a torrent of disinformation3 spread, deflecting attention from the root cause of these escalating events.

CTA Enforcement Suspended for U.S. Citizens and Domestic Companies, Further Guidance Expected
On Sunday, March 2, 2025, the U.S. Treasury Department issued a press release declaring it suspended the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) enforcement of the Corporate Transparency Act (CTA) against U.S. citizens and domestic reporting companies. This comes less than two weeks after we reported on FinCEN’s February 19, 2025 reinstatement of the reporting requirements under, and enforcement of, the CTA after the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas in Smith v.
CTA Filing Requirements Reinstated; More Changes Expected
The reporting requirements under the Corporate Transparency Act (CTA) and its enforcement by the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) are once again in effect. On February 17, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas granted an order in Smith v. United States Department of the Treasury lifting a nationwide preliminary injunction on the CTA. In making this ruling, Judge Jeremy Kernodle relied on the January 23 U.S. Supreme Court order in McHenry v. Texas Top Cop Shop, Inc.
Federal Corporate Transparency Act Takes Effect January 1; Some States Following Suit
On September 30, 2022, the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network of the Department of the Treasury (FinCEN) finalized regulations to implement the Corporate Transparency Act (CTA), originally passed under the 2021 National Defense Authorization Act. The regulations will be effective starting January 1, 2024.
Perceptual constancy for an odour is acquired through changes in primary sensory neurons
Abstract The ability to consistently recognise an object despite sensory input that varies with environmental conditions and/or distance from the object is termed perceptual constancy. This is not an innate ability, rather it develops early in life and is likely dependent upon experience. The neural mechanisms underpinning the development of perceptual constancy are poorly understood.
Transmission failure from olfactory receptor neurons targeting a single glomerulus disrupts odour constancy
Abstract The mechanisms through which the brain encodes odour identity and maintains the stability of the resultant olfactory percept are not well understood. The combination of activated receptors is thought to encode identity (1, 2), while a cascade of mechanisms is thought to give rise to odour constancy (3). Yet some odours evoke different percepts at low and higher concentrations (4).

Why your COBOL code isn't going anywhere
Over time, applications become stale and clunky, and perhaps just stop working altogether. So it's amazing that, 60 years after the COBOL programming language first came on the scene, many COBOL applications are still with us. That's an incredible testament to the resilience of the language. Here's why that happened, and how COBOL and the many business applications written in the language are continuing to evolve and adapt to the modern enterprise.
Preventive Maintenance Servicing for vehicle scales saves time and money
By Mark Conway, Fairbanks Scales Inc. The goal of any vehicle scale service program should be to ensure that equipment stays in working order, with minimal downtime between service visits or the life of the product. The losses to revenue due to a scale failure can exceed the cost of maintenance. Adopting a comprehensive preventive maintenance program ultimately saves money over the long run. Owners should opt for a program with the level that fit their specific needs.

Fake academic scandal: Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf words used in embarrassing journal hoax
A TRIO of concerned academics has published seven intentionally absurd papers in leading scholarly journals, making bizarre recommendations including chaining up children and keeping men on leashes. The trio say the papers, which used fabricated authors and credentials, are an attempt to expose political bias in fields that study race, gender and sexuality, which they see as being misled by biased research and poor methodology.

G6 backs a carbon price and “just transition,” but Trump isolates U.S. further on climate, trade
The divide between the United States and its allies widened in Quebec last weekend. President Donald Trump left early, skipping the session on climate change and retracting the U.S. endorsement of a joint statement on trade. He has stood his ground on climate and trade, announcing his intent to withdraw from the Paris Agreement and enacting or threatening tariffs on our closest neighbors and allies. But climate and trade are where the president — and all of us — stand to lose big.

We’ve all been baffled and infuriated by the size of a mechanics bill, but Canadian Daniel Sheikhan has the video evidence to justify it. Shekhan left his dash cam on while his Mercedes Benz was being serviced in Toronto, capturing his mechanics failing to service the car in the 11 minutes it was on a hoist, then taking it out for an ice cream run.

Woman snapped eating cereal while driving
WE’VE all been angered by drivers using phones while driving, which reached what we thought was its peak last month with a driver caught using FaceTime while driving on Mitchell Freeway. However, a Perth motorist may have taken it a step further after a photo emerged of a woman eating cereal while behind the wheel. The photo, taken on Marmion Avenue near Ocean Reef Rd, was taken by 6PR listener Matt and sent in to the radio station.

A month later, that chance footage has now been viewed almost 30 million times. Mathie, who was working at Rhythm and Vines Festival in Gisborne, looked up local tourist spots and took his Phantom 3 drone down to film “drunken teenagers and randoms” cooling off from the festival.
