State finalizing acquisition of Wahiawā Dam

The state Agribusiness Development Corp. is finalizing the state’s acquisition of the Wahiawā Dam on Oʻahu. The ADC board recently approved the final terms of an agreement to purchase part of the Wahiawā Irrigation System from Dole Food Company. The board also agreed to the terms of a separate right-of-entry agreement “for purposes of a construction base yard related to the ongoing modifications” of the dam and its spillway.

UH researchers renew fruit fly management efforts

There’s a renewed interest in managing one of Hawaiʻi’s most ubiquitous pests — fruit flies. Fruit flies were first introduced to the state in 1945 and have more than 400 host species. The flies breed in fruit, damaging them so they can’t be sold at market. Some estimates say they cost Hawaiʻi $300 million annually in lost markets for local crops.

Honolulu budget leaves out support for storm-impacted farmers
