Yesterday we asked: In which city was the first Mardi Gras held? Answer: Mobile, Alabama, claims to be the first American city that observed the event, in 1703. While French explorers first celebrated Mardi Gras in America in 1699 in a spot about 60 miles south of New Orleans, the city of New Orleans wasn’t founded until 1718, and Mobile was founded in 1702. So it comes down to some technicalities.
