What was your first job as a journalist?
I was a columnist for a free entertainment weekly.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes. I actually wrote my first novel, The Promised Land, on a typewriter. (And then I had to get it professionally retyped)!
How is social media changing news?
I'm from PR and don't think I'd be here without social media. It led me to blogging, guest posting and writing a newsletter.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
The news anchor Howard Beale, played by Peter Finch in the film Network.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
By email, with a catchy subject line (not too click-baity) and a succinct story (a par or two).
What's your favorite social network?
It used to be Twitter. But these days it's LinkedIn (maybe because I do courses for them). I also get good engagement there.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
I didn't but wrote some reviews for university newspapers.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Be open to ideas from PR pros who have done their homework.
When's the best time to pitch you?
That depends. I guess do a search on me first to see if what you're offering fits what I'm writing about.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
It's usually a pitch for Inside PR, the podcast I co-host, sent by someone who never listens!
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
By my smartphone :).
