COMMENTARY: Fewer students should mean smarter schools, not permanent budgets
Walk into many classrooms in this new school year, and you will notice something: empty desks. Not a few. Not temporarily. Fewer students are enrolling in public schools, and that includes in Las Vegas. Since the pandemic, enrollment has dropped by 1.4 million students, and analysts expect it to keep falling through 2031. Public school enrollment stood at 50.8 million students in fall 2019.

Lueken: Fewer students cause to trim budgets
Getting your Trinity Audio player ready... Walk into many classrooms in this new school year, and you will notice something: empty desks. Not a few. Not temporarily. Fewer students are enrolling in public schools. Since the pandemic, enrollment has dropped by 1.4 million students, and analysts expect it to keep falling through 2031. This is not merely the fallout of the COVID-era disruption. It’s a structural shift that will affect real decisions. Higher education has confronted this problem before.
Gakkou Souji (学校掃除)
In the United States, school cleaning is usually treated as a custodial responsibility. That makes sense: clean, safe facilities matter for student health and learning, and custodians do important work to maintain them.

The Real Story Behind Arizona’s ESA “Switcher” Rates
A common criticism of universal education choice programs is that the “vast majority of ESA students were already enrolled in private schools.” Arizona’s experience shows why this claim can be highly misleading. When the Arizona Department of Education (AZ DOE) released its report on the first year of universal ESA expansion, critics latched onto one number: just 21% of new ESA students were in public schools immediately before ESA enrollment (see Table 2 of the most recent report).
School Choice and School Closures
There’s a famous statistical truth frequently shared in college courses and pop economics books: crime rates are strongly associated with ice cream sales. If this was the level of rigor we used to make public policy decisions, we might move to ban ice cream in the name of law and order. This would be a mistake, of course. Ice cream does not cause crime, but it is more popular during warmer months, which also happens to be the time of year crime rates are higher.

Lueken: Popularity of private school choice is booming
There’s little debate that school choice programs have been booming in popularity in recent years. Since 2021, state lawmakers have created a dozen educational choice programs available to all students and established a host of other, more targeted programs. And since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, nationwide participation in private school choice programs has roughly doubled, surpassing 1 million students enrolled this school year.

Public schools need private schools to survive COVID-19
In order to slow the spread of COVID-19, schools across the nation have closed down. Without assistance, some might never reopen. As policymakers scramble to contain the damage wrought by the novel coronavirus, they should consider the effects of permanent private school closures on not only the students and families they serve but also on state coffers and the district school system.
School choice can help ease Georgia’s looming fiscal issues
By Marty Lueken and Benjamin Scafidi The COVID-19 recession is leading to sharp reductions in tax revenues. State and local governments need to conserve funds for urgent priorities – aid to the unemployed, hungry and sick – in addition to longstanding priorities like education, public safety, transportation and the environment.
School Voucher Programs in Indiana and Louisiana - Education Next
June is shaping to be a busy month for private school choice advocates, critics, and opponents. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled on the Trinity Lutheran case, CREDO recently released a nationwide evaluation of charter schools, and two separate teams of researchers just released updates to their evaluations of voucher programs in Indiana and Louisiana. A vigorous debate has surrounded the voucher programs in Indiana, the District of Columbia, Louisiana, and Ohio.
Profiting From Educational Choice?
Last year, more than 250,000 students in 17 states used tax-credit scholarships to attend schools their families chose. Under such policies, taxpayers can receive tax credits worth between 50 percent to 100 percent of their donations to nonprofit scholarship organizations that help low- and middle-income students attend private schools.

Going Bold in Missouri with Education Savings Accounts
Last year, Missouri was one of 18 states that introduced legislation to create an education savings account (ESA) program for families. While it didn’t ultimately become law, it’s stoked the conversation about educational choice in the state and how we can empower families to find schooling options that work for their kids. Under an ESA program, state officials deposit money into an account for education expenses for children who sign up for the plan.
Correcting Misinformation on School Choice
In an opinion piece in the Nonprofit Quarterly with the title “What Wisconsin and Arizona Should Teach Us About School Vouchers,” Martin Levine recycles several claims commonly trumpeted by school choice opponents – but without any evidence or appropriate context. Mr. Levine ignores the ample evidence available that school choice provides benefits for children. This does a disservice to the thousands of children and families who have benefited from school choice over the last couple decades.
Marty Lueken: School choice helps more students achieve
More than 115,000 children in Wisconsin attend a public charter school, get a voucher for private school, or choose a public school through open enrollment. While many people know these programs are popular, what is less understood is the evidence of their positive impacts on a variety of student outcomes. This is especially true when we narrow the studies to those that use the strongest of research methods: random assignment.
A colossal waste of money
Millions of families across the United States exercise a right to choose their schools. Nearly 70% of respondents in a recent survey indicate support for school choice, including 60% of Democrats. But U.S. Reps. Mark Pocan (D-Wis.), Gwen Moore (D-Wis.) and David Loebsack (D-Iowa) don't share the public's enthusiasm for choice. They recently asked the Government Accountability Office to launch an investigation into the Milwaukee Parental Choice Program.
