Visit St. George Island: A short distance from Florida's coast but a world away
On a crescent of paper-white beach along Florida’s gulf coast, the sun catches slivers of sand in trillions of tiny sparkles so that the powdery strand looks as if it’s frosted with sugar. The water is warm, the breezes are cool, and the vibe is bucolic, barefoot simplicity. This is St. George Island, and it is not merely a beach escape as much as it is a peaceful and quiet sanctuary for the mind and soul.
Kayaking in unusual places
On a gloriously cool and sunny day in late summer, as a friend and I kayaked in an estuary of the St. Lawrence Seaway in the Quebec Maritime near Baie-Comeau, an amazing thing happened. A beluga whale rocked my world.

Town of LaGrange preserves 2 centuries of history amid gleam of Georgia charm
In Lafayette Square, the centerpiece of LaGrange, it is still the 1890s. As I walk the entirety of the red-bricked circular pathway around the square and admire the massive fountain jetting untold thousands of gallons of crystal-clear water toward the bluest of skies, myriad crepe myrtles and roses provide showy pinks, reds and purples to complement my stroll.

Travel: Charming Georgia town a treat for ‘Flanatics’ of celebrated Southern writer O’Connor Original
MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga.— When the Savannah-born Flannery O’Connor, widely regarded as the queen of Southern Gothic literature, moved home to Georgia from Connecticut in 1951, she was diagnosed with lupus, an incurable, crippling autoimmune disease. Her mother brought the then 25-year-old to live with her at Andalusia, the family farm just north of Milledgeville, a town of some 17,000 in the heart of Georgia’s lake country.

Escapes that take your breath away: Indulge with your sweetheart in a Valentine's vacation
When it comes to sharing Valentine’s Day with your one true love, don’t think diamonds and hearts and fancy gourmet restaurants. Instead, think getaway, as in it’s the one time of the year to get away from it all and indulge (read: splurge) in one or two or all of the world’s most luxurious hotels. Instead of a dozen roses, here are a dozen romantic escapes scattered from one corner of the world to the other to treat your sweetie.

Think Spring: Five Spring Break Vacation Ideas in the Northwest
As far away as it feels, the week of March 26 – 31 is just over two months away, and for most students focused on surviving school, break is going to “spring” (pun intended) upon students sooner than they think. To get the best deals and pricing, now is the time to brainstorm how to enjoy an entire week away from the workload of school.
Global airlines are aiming higher for flights that are ultra-longer
Scoot over, Singapore Airlines, there will soon be a new sheriff in town, er, in the sky, as competition for the world’s longest nonstop flight is winging its way forward. The world is about to become smaller, its farthest-flung corners closer than ever before, and it happens all in one long, long, long flight.

This little Las Vegas claims a large presence in New Mexico's history, landscape - and skies
In the first chapter of Genesis, it is written, “And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.” Eons later, the Las Vegas City Council wrote, “Let there be dark: and there was dark.” In this remote corner of New Mexico, dark sky ordinances are in place to ensure stargazers, even if they’re standing in the middle of this small town with its population of 13,000, have little light pollution to better enjoy the exquisiteness of clear nights and constellations and galaxies sparkling in...

Rock Ulibarri stands in front of “The People’s History of El Norte,” an 11-panel chronology of Las Vegas mural he designed. It was then vividly painted by some 300 high school students.

Wisconsin's Lake Geneva, once a grand resort for the rich, offers laid-back charm
When Albert Einstein came to America for the first time, he asked to see only two places. The first was Niagara Falls, understandable on his part for its sheer power and beauty. The other was Yerkes Observatory in Williams Bay, Wis., often touted as the birthplace of astrophysics, about 15 minutes from Lake Geneva. Once you've seen the observatory, you'll understand why.
Northern Explorer a captivating rail ride through heart of New Zealand (no Wi-Fi needed)
On a bright, clear fall morning, the train from Wellington to Auckland clatters away from the rail station precisely as scheduled at 7:55. The temperature hovers coolly in the mid-50s, not at all cold, and quite typical for a Southern Hemisphere fall morning.
LOVELY LAKE GENEVA
TRAVEL Einstein really got around. It seems just about every-where I've visited, he was there first, among them Prague, Singapore and Williams Bay, a small community only 15 minutes from Lake Geneva. No, not that Lake Geneva on the border of Switzerland and France, but the Lake Geneva of Wisconsin. When Albert Einstein, the Nobel Prize-winning scientist and world traveler, came to America for the first time, he asked to see only two places.
Drifting down river into Darien: A Georgia getaway awaits
Driving north into Darien on U.S. Highway 17, I pass over a long bridge that crosses the Darien River, an offshoot of the Altamaha River considered Georgia’s wildest and most beautiful. To the right, clustered shrimp boats bob slightly in shimmery water, as if they are curtsying, their riggings capturing the filtered light of a spring day. With dappled clouds in the background, the picturesque scenery is striking.

My Summer As A Youth Intern
Those of us who have spent our summers with teenagers in youth ministry often feel a certain bond with our fellow interns. Who can forget eating all that ice cream with high schoolers, playing kickball with middle schoolers, or even wrangling the masses of pre-K-through- elementary schoolers at VBS programs? There is something sacred about the humid lull of the summer afternoon laden with the anticipation of an awkward teenage pool party.

Think a safari can't be romantic? Kenya's tented camp resorts add splendor to a honeymoon adventure
The moment was dreamlike and mesmerizing. An enormous pride of golden lions slumbered, snored and groaned in the afternoon sun, their long tails thumping against one another and then on the ground in a series of nonstop feline movements. A couple from Sweden sat next to me in the Land Rover on safari in Kenya's Masai Mara, and the husband started counting them off one by one until he announced a total of 16 of the cats, just a big pile of lion love.

Spirited Blairsville has endless supply of Georgia's mountain culture Original
BLAIRSVILLE, Ga. — Spring had come to the Blue Ridge Mountains. The rhododendron and mountain laurel were popping out in unreal shades of pink, and the massive hardwoods of birch and maple only recently bare-leafed in winter had begun their seasonal metamorphoses with emerald-green new growth. Somewhere in those forest-covered North Georgia mountains, slumbering bears were just waking from their hibernation.
