A smartphone-based, artificial intelligence (AI) tool, can screen for rare ocular surface malignancies with similar accuracy to specialist-graded slit-lamp exams, according to research published in JAMA Ophthalmology. The study suggests that the app can identify cases with up to 5 times greater efficiency than conventional hospital-based referral pathways. This prospective, nonrandomized clinical trial (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT05645341) developed and validated the CaptureTumor app.

Researchers Develop Sex-Specific Model for Retinopathy of Prematurity

Compared with female infants, male infants have different risk factors for treatment-required retinopathy of prematurity (TR-ROP), indicating that prediction models should be sex-specific, research published in Retina suggests. This study is the first to incorporate sex in analyzing risk of TR-ROP. The researchers sought to develop a clinically suitable prediction model — one that would not require high-quality fundus images or expert interpretation.
