Matt Elliott’s Biography

A City Hall watcher, Matt Elliott has been covering municipal politics in Toronto since 2011. Matt provides insight, analysis, opinon and jokes about local topics like public transit, affordable housing, city finances and more. He currently contributes a weekly opinion column to the Toronto Star and publishes the award-winning City Hall Watcher newsletter.

City Hall Watcher is one of Canada's longest-running and most successful independent email newsletters, with thousands of weekly readers. In 2022, it was named as the best editorial newsletter by the Digital Publishing Awards.

A graduate of the University of King's College in Halifax, Matt currently lives in Toronto's Corktown neighbourhood with his family and a cat. He has been a part-time professor in the journalism program at Humber College since 2015.
