MATTHEW WILLIAMS: South Georgia veterans cross the line for VA care. They should not lose their mental health treatment when they do. - Valdosta Daily Times
A veteran in Lowndes County who receives mental health care through the Department of Veterans Affairs is, in most cases, receiving that care by video — a Georgia-licensed therapist on a screen, in the veteran’s home, paid for under VA’s community-care program because VA could not schedule an in-person appointment in time. For many veterans, this telehealth relationship is the most reliable form of mental health care they have ever had. It does not require driving.
China and our economic freedom
The United States’ current predicament with China presents an ethical quagmire. Few would deny that China poses a national security threat worthy of a strategic response. The Trump Administration has proposed a bevy of economic policies designed to bolster sectors of the U.S. economy. Many of these rely on tariffs, subsidies, and government buy-ins to private industry. Such measures might strengthen select sectors in the short term, but it is worth asking, at what cost?

Bureaucratic Displacement in College Institutions
The Trump administration has begun pressuring colleges by withholding federal funds, looking to revoke their tax-exempt status, and demanding greater accountability from private universities. Citing the rise of anti‑Semitic protests, incidents, and violence toward Jewish students since October 7th, the explosive expansion of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs, and the use of racist affirmative action programs in admissions.
Would the FDA Pass Its Own Audit?
Fox News's Bret Baier recently interviewed Elon Musk and other Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) executives, outlining their plans for the program while sharing some harrowing realities about our federal government. Tom Krause, a member of DOGE tasked with overhauling the Treasury Department, revealed, "The Federal Government could not pass an audit." This remark raises questions about accountability within government regulatory agencies.
Politicizing Science
A recent article in Nature lamented Trump's policy decisions to cut funding for specific government organizations and his call for investigations into studies laden with gender-based language. The scientific elite found these initiatives so unacceptable that some scientists are now threatening to leave the United States -- an act they frame as a protest. The mere existence of the option to address gender issues in science indicates that efforts to politicize science were already well underway.
Dr. Marty Makary’s ‘Blind Spots’ Book Is At Odds With Established Findings By Benjamin Rushe
Marty Makary is well-known for writing informal autobiographical books critiquing medical practice in America. Given that he is poised to lead the FDA, it should concern people that his book, Blind Spots: When Medicine Gets It Wrong, and What It Means for Our Health, has some serious biased presentation of data inaccuracies. How can Dr. Makary claim he is qualified to run the FDA when he presents controversial data in such a biased style?
Jay Bhattacharya's promise on vaccine safety
Dr. Jay Bhattacharya is best known for his dissent from the establishment during the pandemic response. He famously -- some may say infamously -- drafted, signed, and fervently supported the Great Barrington Declaration, which opposed Draconian-style lockdowns and mask mandates. Dr. Bhattacharya warned of the long-term consequences these policies would inflict on mental and physical health.
RFK Jr. Debunks Critics and Confirms Open-Mindedness on Vaccines
Shortly after a tragic measles outbreak in Texas resulted in the death of a child, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. addressed the nation in an op-ed published by Fox News that underscored the critical importance of childhood vaccinations. Through a post on the social media platform X, he assured the public that the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) would actively monitor the situation and provide necessary support.
The Case Against a European Health Model for America
Stock up on your Mountain Dew: Code Red, M&Ms, and Swedish Fish -- while these iconic items aren’t necessarily disappearing, a relatively minor but controversial component of their chemical anatomy will be phased out by 2027: Red 40. This synthetic dye will join the ranks of brominated substances and propylparabens. Red 40’s forced retirement comes amid growing pressure from the populace demanding elimination of the dye from food items due to safety concerns.
Price Controls: The Red Herring of Pharmaceutical Reform
Trump has been busy. A recent action of his slipped under the radar as it’s not as exciting as deportations, DOGE dismantling corruption, and bringing back plastic straws. The president recently reversed key aspects of the Biden administration’s price control policies that were enforced on pharma through the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). This is a step in the right direction.
DOGE for the FDA
What would America look like without a regulatory body like the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) overseeing and deciding drug safety and approval? The idea almost seems too radical to entertain. We are accustomed to trusting bodies like the FDA to ensure our safety regarding drugs on the market, corruption from greed, and conflicts of interest. “Is it FDA-approved?” is a rite of passage for many before considering foods and supplements.
By Matthew Williams Senior Policy Analyst, Health (11/12/24) As autumn is in full swing, Americans are increasingly preparing for a busy end of the year. While the end of the year is thought to be a joyous period for spending time with family and friends, some people may feel down or depressed. This may be due to the very common phenomenon known as winter-pattern seasonal affective disorder (SAD), caused by lower outside light levels in the late autumn and winter months.

Williams notes that while maritime pilotage remains critical, pilot ladders have emerged as a significant concern due to high rates of non-compliance over the past five years.

Farm to fork summit not the only thing PM has on his plate as rural voters threaten to desert Conservatives
Today’s second annual Farm to Fork summit is an opportunity for the Prime Minister to set out the government’s plans to support British farming. This is being held against a backdrop of a very wet spring, and the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board suggesting that 15% less land will be planted with wheat this year, along with 12% of the total arable land in Britain remaining fallow. The publication of the first UK Food Security Index, therefore, comes at a very opportune moment.

Real Men Feel
Let me tell you something you maybe don’t know. Men struggle. That’s right. We struggle with stress at work, with our relationships, with our self-confidence and self-esteem, even with our mental health. Every single day, men everywhere are putting on a mask and pretending they’re ok; laughing, joking, being strong and dependable, while inside they are hurting, perhaps even despairing, and struggling to cope. And you didn’t even realise it. Wait, what do you mean you knew? Who told you?!?

Hi Vogue. This is Bella Hadid and I'm going to take you through my Life in Look so far. [gentle music] Okay. I'm nervous. Oh goodness! Our first one we have is my first Met Ball. I went with Topshop. And this short little dress, I don't know why we were decided with that, but I remember I went to the fitting and realized I had no shoes. So I went to Saint Laurent myself and I got these platform, golden and silver heels which I still have today. I was so nervous, and I think I ran through the carpet.
The Science of Hate
At what point does prejudice become hate crime? Hate crimes are spiralling to an all-time high on both sides of the Atlantic, with minorities experiencing the largest increase in hostility towards their race, nationality, sexuality and religion since records began. Whilst recent political turmoil could be a contributing factor to this spike, professor Matthew Williams shows that there is nothing temporary about the hate that has been stirred up.

Taking Control of Your Life and Becoming Your Best Self
We live in an age of constant comparison, assailed by a ceaseless bombardment of digital and real world noise that tells us how we should think, act, dress and feel. An age where who and what we are never seems enough. Where the answer to all of our problems is somewhere out there, tantalizingly out of our grasp; and if we do happen to find it, the bar against which we are measured moves, and we fall short again. Hell no. There’s a better way. You set the standard.

7 Myths About Depression that Must be Laid to Rest - Positively Positive

"Mirror Symmetry for Non-Abelian Landau-Ginzburg Models" by Matthew Michael Williams
Abstract We consider Landau-Ginzburg models stemming from non-abelian groups comprised of non-diagonal symmetries, and we describe a rule for the mirror LG model. In particular, we present the non-abelian dual group G*, which serves as the appropriate choice of group for the mirror LG model. We also describe an explicit mirror map between the A-model and the B-model state spaces for two examples.
When You Know, You KNOW
I was always a boxing nut. A child of the 80s, I was introduced to the sport at the age of 10 by Rocky Balboa. In 1985 a threat to Rocky’s crown emerged from the icy wastelands of Siberia, Ivan Drago, inspiring an epidemic of children’s flat-top haircuts that counted me amongst its number. Rocky’s former rival-turned-trainer-turned-friend, Apollo Creed, growing restless in retirement, made it his duty to teach the young amateur upstart a thing or two about the professional ring.

Investigating complaints in lockdown
We are now well into the third month of lockdown and we know how challenging it has been for everyone who lives, or works, in prison. With regimes restricted and most outside agencies unable to work within the walls, independent scrutiny of our prisons has never been so important. In March, along with other scrutiny bodies, we had to suspend our visits and at the same time couldn’t access our post to read letters of complaint or to receive documents to inform our investigations.

Love in the Time of Lockdown
Home / Featured Content / Love in the Time of Lockdown — We all have a story to tell. Our stories connect us to others, enabling us to recognise our shared humanity in our shared struggles and triumphs. We are a social species and we need such connections; we need to feel that we belong somewhere. And when life is dark we need to know that we aren’t alone; that someone, somewhere, gets it. That somebody just like us has been there, and has come out the other side.
The Bravest Thing I’ve Ever Done
(Spoiler: it’s not joining Plenty Of Fish) When you speak openly about your struggles with mental health you get called brave quite a lot. It’s understandable, reflecting as it does the very real stigma that has long existed around the issue. Thankfully, this has been consistently challenged in recent years, in particular thanks to the brilliant Time to Change campaign.
