Matt Denis’s Biography

An intrepid, alway-curious reporter whose investigations and deep research unearth vibrant socio-cultural stories that illuminate the issues and the innovators instituting possible solutions to provide more equitable, expressive communities.

At current, this means a deep dive into small business and retail in Jacksonville, Florida for the Jax Biz Jnl. My beat features a focus on food and drink and includes coverage of associated parties — banks and credit unions. This reportage also encompasses arts and culture in Duval, Nassau and St. Johns counties as creative expression is an important aspect of the lifestyle industry.

I earned my investigative restaurant chops on a freelance beat uplifting greater Denver restaurant coverage searching municipal permit records, social media posts, commercial lease listings, and local news reports. Subsequent six to eight weekly published posts for the What Now media group drove revenue with "Partner Leads" sold to large hospitality partners.

I began freelancing with eight to 12 evergreen features and news analyses for TheManual.com. These articles offered the elements for an engaged lifestyle and expanded Gen Z and Millennial readership. My hundreds of takes on current culture, entertainment, national news, politics, sports, style, and more helped to spark a 38% year-over-year digital readership growth in 2022.

From 2018 to 2021, I established a new creative beat — CAFE 541, a weekly broadsheet — that brought thousands of new digital and print readers to The Register-Guard in Eugene, Oregon. This required reporting on a massive swathe professionals and organizations delivering an incredible cultural diversity swathe from the Pacific Coast and into the Cascade Range. Our audience (and subscriptions) grew even when the skies were red from wildfires and when all manner of expression was shut down during the pandemic.
