What was your first job as a journalist?

I was the editor of a tiny weekly newspaper in Northampton Mass in 1978 called 'Fresh Ink.'

Have you ever used a typewriter?

yes I used to use an IBM Selectric at one of my early jobs as an editor in Portland Maine.

How is social media changing news?

Craig's list killed the classified ad but honestly they do a better job. Too many top ten lists in my view.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

That you pursue the answers...in my case that means, what is a place like? What does it feel like to visit there?

Macbook Pro and a Yeti microphone for my podcast GoNOMAD Travel Podcast. Daily episodes.

Who do you wish followed you?

Well I'm happy that President Obama follows my twitter. I'd like Barry Diller to follow me. I want to meet him.

Why did you become a journalist?

Because I'm so curious and I really do want to know.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Yes I wrote the headlines and went to the printers with the galleys.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

I did a cover article back in the '80s about a Radio reverend that was pretty good. I like my blog too. Always fresh.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Just write, keep trying and keep traveling so you'll have something to write about. Don't stay home all the time.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Morning by email.

What's the best pitch you ever got?

I get so many...The weirder the better.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

golf or cbd or essay writing. GO AWAY!!

What's your favorite drink?

Chardonnay

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Taking a flight to a new destination and chatting up the Uber driver to find out what makes it great.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That travel writers have been everywhere. Often they don't even leave their desks.
