“I didn’t set out to work in pharmaceuticals. In fact, I started my career in construction as an engineer designing buildings, not medicines. But even then, something drew me toward science. One of my first projects was a building in Cambridge, Massachusetts that later became a Novartis lab, and I remember being really inspired by the purpose behind it. As the years passed, I realized I wanted that same sense of purpose in my own work. I wanted to do something that mattered to people’s lives.

A world without bars on the windows In my life I have lived or worked in some of the world’s most unequal countries, like South Africa, and some that are much more equal (although becoming less so), like the UK. I vividly remember how it felt when I moved back to the UK after living in Kenya. When you are in a country that is fairly equal, it feels so different. There are more public spaces, libraries, parks, swimming pools, sports grounds.

Protests in Kenya - Who is to Blame?

Kenya is on fire. Many thousands of Kenyans, led by young people but from all ages and walks of life, have been protesting in Nairobi and across the country. The scale of the protests was not something Kenya has seen for decades. For many, including many friends and colleagues, this was their first-ever demonstration. Kenya, like most of Africa, has a very young population; the average age is 19.
