Grand Marshal
The Bellevue Ambulance service (now known as Bellevue Emergency Medical Services) was organized in late 1971 when the funeral homes were getting out of the ambulance business. Initially a “load and go” service, it was now directed by the state to do more patient care on the scene and en route to the hospitals. Robert (Bob) Ernst saw the need to continue this service and with the help of his brothers, Gerry and Vern organized Bellevue Ambulance in November of that year.
Design(stripe) for the rest of us
This year will mark 40 years since Adobe was founded. In the decades since, Adobe has been the most influential shaper of internet and graphical design through pivotal transitions in their journey and how software is delivered broadly: from early origins in creating underlying programming languages and file formats like PostScript and .PDF to many evolutions of Flash and their continued expansion of the Creative Suite offering.
Production Ops, Finally- Behind the Investment: Shoreline
You don’t need to be a developer or devOps investor to know that software developers like to spend time creating, not maintaining apps and systems. While the cloud world has been an incredibly powerful enabler for software developers to build and automate workloads not previously possible in a faster and more exhaustive way, most software fanatics only see this side of the story.
From Zero Abstraction to Island: It’s About Time Cybersecurity Gets a Restart | Blog | Insight Partners
Cyber security in theory should be simple – attack surface expands as software and cloud workloads complexify, new vulnerabilities and attack vectors form, and cybersecurity companies emerge to fill in the gaps. Unfortunately for CISOs and enterprise security teams, for every net new vulnerability, the number of attack vectors it creates tends to be tenfold.
EMS Volunteers are recognized
We want to recognize our members who retired this year after giving 10 or more years of service to the Bellevue EMS service. Dennis Ernst retired after 34 years. Becky Giesemann retired after 21-plus years. Tricia Steines retired after 20-plus years. Kim Ethington retired after 17-plus years. Please join us in thanking these people for all their years of service (over 92 years total). Due to this Covid-19 pandemic, we are unable to throw a public reception event at this time.
A perfect storm is brewing for non-compliant U.S. taxpayers abroad
Subtle changes mean clients may want to act soon By: Max Reed May 4, 2020 May 4, 2020 14:23 © Michael Gray / 123RF Stock Photo Max Reed According to 2016 U.S. government estimates, there are 825,630 U.S. citizens living in Canada. Nearly all are supposed to file U.S. federal income tax returns — even if they owe no tax — but many haven’t bothered. To date, the consequences of ignoring these obligations have been fairly marginal.
Bellevue EMS strong
At a time when a lot of small-town ambulance services are struggling, Bellevue Emergency Medical Services (EMS) is still going strong. And the reason is 300 dedicated volunteers who have served with Bellevue EMS over the past 48 years. Bellevue is fortunate to have so many volunteers working with many different service groups in the community. Our service is just one of them. We have been able to keep 20-some members on our roster for the last few years.
Tax issues when Canadians have U.S. executors
Tips to avoid cross-border complications By: Max Reed June 13, 2019 June 13, 2019 16:00 © Michael Gray / 123RF Stock Photo Max Reed A common and problematic occurrence in cross-border families is for a Canadian to select a close relative in the U.S. as an executor. Clients considering this option should weigh the potential consequences. To illustrate the problems, let’s use an example. Fictional couple Noah and Shayna live in Edmonton but their son, Ari, lives in Cleveland.
Pleading not GILTI: tax deferral strategies for Canadian-resident U.S. citizens
The recently passed U.S. tax law makes it more complicated for American citizens outside the United States to run businesses, because their income may be judged to be GILTI: global intangible low-taxed income. As we’ve learned, the GILTI rules were enacted to ensure that companies do not try to shift all profits to foreign subsidiaries in low-tax countries, since those foreign profits can be repatriated tax-free.
How the new U.S. tax law complicates life for U.S. business owners
Editor’s note: Stay tuned for the February issue of Advisor’s Edge, which reviews other ways the U.S. tax changes affect cross-border clients. The recently passed U.S. tax law makes it more complicated for American citizens outside the United States to run businesses. The new Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TJCA) contains two complex tax regimes to consider: the one-time mandatory repatriation tax and the annual GILTI rules. Their one-two punch may drive U.S. citizens to renounce their citizenship.
Clients may risk steep penalties if they don’t file U.S. tax forms
Haven’t filed all your required U.S. tax paperwork? If you’re really unlucky, you might get sued. Last May, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) sued Jeffrey P. Pomerantz — a U.S.-Canadian dual citizen resident in Canada — for more than US$860,300 in penalties and interest for failing to file his FBAR bank disclosure forms, even though he filed his tax returns. This case is one of the first known instances of the enforcement of FBAR penalties against a U.S. citizen living in Canada.
Renouncing U.S. citizenship after U.S. tax reform
Editor’s note: This is an updated version of a story that first ran in 2016. The new U.S. tax rules are likely to increase the number of Canadian-resident U.S. citizens who want to renounce. U.S. tax reform did not change the rules around renunciation much, but it did expand the category of people who can renounce U.S. citizenship without paying an exit tax. The reason: the U.S. estate and gift tax threshold has more than doubled since last year and is now US$11.2 million per U.S. citizen.
4 structures to protect Canadians from the U.S. estate tax-updated
Editor’s note: This is an updated version of a story first published in November 2016. Canadian residents who aren’t U.S. citizens may be surprised to know that U.S. estate tax can apply to them. Newly enacted U.S. tax rules have increased the exemption amount, but there are still pitfalls to be aware of. The way U.S. estate tax works has not really changed. The tax applies to any assets that are considered to be located in the United States (such assets are called “U.S. situs assets”).
Tax consequences of inheriting money from the U.S.
Many Canadians inherit money from relatives in the United States. There are generally no issues on either side of the border if a Canadian inherits property or money through a will. That being said, many residents plan their estates by using a trust rather than a will for the purpose of avoiding probate. U.S. tax law pretends this trust does not exist.
Is it possible to ditch U.S. citizenship retroactively?
Whether for ideological reasons or tax complications, many people want to shed their citizenship. There are two ways to do so: renunciation and relinquishment. Renunciation requires swearing an oath at a U.S. consulate. A person who renounces is no longer a U.S. citizen from the date of that oath onward. Meanwhile, relinquishment refers to losing U.S. citizenship due to a prior external event called an “expatriating act.” This article will focus on relinquishment.
Zika hasn't threatened Art Basel Miami Beach fair week - yet
Will Art Basel Miami Beach fair week be zapped by a mosquito? It’s too soon to tell, but stay tuned. As the number of locally transmitted cases of the Zika virus in South Florida climbed to 22 this week, some in the art world speculate it might affect the early December fairs, when tens of thousands of visitors swarm Miami and Miami Beach to peruse the latest art trends at Art Basel Miami Beach and nearly 20 satellite fairs.
