MALAKAND: The Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) on Friday announced that it would hold protests against unannounced power cuts across Malakand Division on April 24. During a news conference here, JI Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (North) president Inayatullah Khan said the province generated surplus electricity but the hydel power produced for one and a half rupees per unit was being sold back for Rs93 per unit. He said Khyber Pakhtunkhwa produced cheap electricity but its residents were facing prolonged power cuts.
Payment of compensation to Diamer-Bhasha Dam landowners begins
MANSEHRA: The Upper Kohistan district administration on Friday began paying compensation to the people whose land was acquired for the Diamer-Bhasha Dam after a jirga settled a territorial dispute between Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan. Upper Kohistan deputy commissioner Azizullah Jan distributed the compensation cheques among the landowners after a meeting of the jirga held in Dasu.
Cop injured in Bajaur attack
BAJAUR: A policeman was injured after unidentified armed men attacked a police post in War Mamund tehsil of Bajaur district late on Friday evening. Official sources told Dawn that the incident occurred in the Badan area. They added that the injured cop was identified as Constable Alam Khan of the Elite Force. Soon after the attack, SP investigations, accompanied by a team, reached the area.
Security at University of Peshawar being enhanced
PESHAWAR: Commissioner Peshawar Division Riaz Khan Mehsud here on Friday visited University of Peshawar where he inspected proposed locations for modern entry and exit points aimed at enhancing campus security. During the visit, officials said that advanced scanners would be installed at the university and the entry and exit system would be upgraded to meet international standards.
Youth lauded for reviving rich Urdu literary tradition
PESHAWAR: In an effort to promote Urdu literature among youth, a vibrant poetry recitation session was held in Hafizullah Auditorium of Khyber Medical University here the other day. The session titled “Hum Sukhan Fehm Hein” was jointly arranged by Human Care Foundation (HCF) and directorate of youth affairs, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The students of KMU, medics and faculty members attended the annual event in a large number.
Rs13 million okayed for feasibility study of Peshawar-Nowshera rail link
PESHAWAR: Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi on Friday approved the initiation of a pre-feasibility study for the railway section connecting Peshawar, Nowshera and Jahangira along with the allocation of Rs13.162 million for this purpose.

MNA removed as head of royalty management body
LAKKI MARWAT: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has removed MNA Sher Afzal Marwat from the chairmanship of the Production Bonus Utilisation Committee. The provincial energy and power department has issued a notification to this effect, according to which MPA Johar Muhammad will replace Mr Marwat as chairman of the committee.
Capital admin readjusts market closure timings
ISLAMABAD: The capital administration issued another notification regarding the closing times of shops, markets and shopping malls in Islamabad, with partial changes to the earlier order issued 10 days ago. The notification, issued from the office of the deputy commissioner Islamabad stated that the earlier partial modification was made in light of the ongoing austerity measures.
