More than 600 species of coral grow in this massive area straddling the Pacific and Indian Oceans, stretching from the Philippines to Bali to the Solomon Islands. But as the oceans get hotter, coral reefs—and the ecosystems they support—are at risk. Experts predict up to 90% of coral could disappear from the world’s warming oceans by 2050.

CalHeatScore creates heat wave warnings for every zip code in California, using temperature data, socioeconomic indicators, and the history of emergency room visits, to predict heat-related health risk. A new tool aims to do for heat waves what Saffir and Simpson did for hurricanes. CalHeatScore, an online mapping tool developed by the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment, ranks heat wave risk on a straightforward scale of 0 to 4.

A new tool aims to do for heat waves what Saffir and Simpson did for hurricanes. CalHeatScore, an online mapping tool developed by the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment, ranks heat wave risk on a straightforward scale of 0 to 4. And just like the Saffir-Simpson scale for hurricane strength, CalHeatScore delivers its warnings days in advance.
