WNYT-TV originally signed onto the Capital District airways in 1954 as WTRI-TV, a UHF TV station with studios and transmitter site on Bald Mountain outside of Troy. One of the original owners of the TV station moved the studios to the site of a warehouse, once used to house Selective Service records.
Eventually, the TV station was assigned the VHF frequency of channel 13 and changed its call letters to WAST-TV. It was sold to Sonderling Broadcasting.
In 1979 WAST Television was purchased by Viacom International. In 1981, it changed its call letters to WNYT and became an affiliate of the National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC). Source

Albany County District Attorney Lee C. Kindlon said Kevin Stevens, 62, was sentenced Wednesday morning by Judge Christopher Maier to four to 12 years in state prison.
Man gets 7 years in prison for raping child in Schenectady
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (WNYT) – A man was sentenced on Wednesday to 7 years in prison for raping a child in Schenectady. Brian Marte-Garcia had pleaded guilty in Schenectady County Court in June to rape. The Schenectady County District Attorney’s Office said that the investigation began in February of this year. The child disclosed the sexual assault to her mother. Marte-Garcia also must serve 10 years of post-release supervision.
Albany International Airport may soon allow visitors past security checkpoint
ALBANY, N.Y. (WNYT) — Albany International Airport expects to join a TSA program that would let approved visitors go past security without a boarding pass. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) announced the new Gateside PreCheck program Monday. It allows people without a boarding pass to go beyond the checkpoint if they have TSA PreCheck or a Known Traveler Number. The program would let visitors say goodbye, welcome someone home or visit an airport restaurant or store.
Albany International Airport cell phone lot closed for expansion
ALBANY, N.Y. (WNYT) — Albany International Airport has closed its cell phone lot for a project that will more than double the number of spaces. Beginning Tuesday, Sept. 9, the airport’s cell phone lot is temporarily closed while construction starts on the expansion project. The project will increase the lot from 32 spaces to 67 spaces. The newly expanded lot is expected to reopen in early November.
Lengthy Shenendehowa school bus delays on first day of school
CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. (WNYT) — Shenendehowa school leaders apologized after widespread first-day bus delays left students getting home later than expected. In an e-mail to families, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Cecily L. Wilson-Turner said the delays happened Tuesday afternoon as the district wrapped up the first day of school. She said long bus rides caused frustration and anxiety for families across the district.

East Greenbush Police looking for missing person
EAST GREENBUSH, N.Y (WNYT) – East Greenbush Police are attempting to locate a missing person. Dominick Bianchi was last seen on Sept. 8 at 10:45 a.m.at 204 Forrest Pointe Dr, East Greenbush NY. Bianchi is a Type 1 diabetic, and it is believed he left his residence on foot. There are currently no suspicious circumstances associated with his disappearance, according to police. He was last seen wearing a black shirt and black sweatpants.
