June 15, 2026 Destiny Maxam was bedridden for months in 2023 after the steering device on her wheelchair broke, leaving her unable to get around on her own. The Lowell resident said she developed pneumonia while waiting for a fix, because her bed didn’t have the same kind of tilt feature to protect her weakened lungs as the chair. Maxam ended up in the emergency room on a ventilator. She eventually recovered.

Elderly, disabled public housing residents in Salem slam city over broken elevators

June 11, 2026 John Hamilton has lived at a Salem public housing high-rise for seniors and people with disabilities for six years. In that time, he has frequently faced disruptions caused by malfunctioning elevators. Sometimes it lasts just a day or two, but sometimes more than a month. “I’m in a wheelchair. My legs don’t work,” Hamilton told GBH News before a community meeting at 27 Charter St. organized by the Charter Street Tenant Association.

Politics and celebration converge at Boston's Pride parade

June 06, 2026 Thousands of people marched, danced and chanted their way through downtown Boston today at the annual Pride parade to celebrate and uplift the LGBTQ+ community. The parade winded its way from Copley Square, through the South End and ended on Boston Common. This year’s theme was “Pride as Protest: Since 1776.” As the country gears up for its 250th birthday this summer, organizers said this year’s parade intended to frame LGBTQ+ history as part of America’s long history of protest.
