I Took a Luxury Cruise on the Mekong — One Tiny Detail Made All the Difference
A few days into my voyage on the 20-suite expedition ship Aqua Mekong, I spot a neatly written note on a whiteboard in the galley: “Melanie — she likes mangoes.” It’s a tiny, charming detail that speaks volumes, a reminder that the little things matter. And for the record, they’re right: I do like mangoes.
There’s No Better Time to Taste Germany
As a Bavarian-born, Australian-raised, Brooklyn-based expat, I’ve spent most of my life finding ways to stay connected to the Vaterland. Growing up in Sydney, we spoke German at home, kept holiday baking traditions alive, and visited family in Germany whenever we could. Now that I’m back in the Northern hemisphere, those visits happen several times a year. Somewhere along the way, I appointed myself an unofficial hype woman for the country’s food and wine culture. It’s a job I take very seriously.

When Bigger Isn’t Better — the Restaurateurs Rethinking What It Means to Grow Original
For Jess Shadbolt, the 2018 Food & Wine Best New Chef and co-founder of the highly acclaimed King, Jupiter, and Dean’s in New York City, years of running restaurants have changed the way she thinks about growth. Early on, she says, she was “really anti expansion.” King was her “one golden egg,” and she was in no hurry to add to the family.
This Philadelphia Restaurant Is Rewriting What a Tasting Menu Can Be
At Honeysuckle, every ingredient has a story. Like the “Cheeto dust”, a neon-orange powder that is made from nutritional yeast and dehydrated chiles (part of the restaurant’s superlative preservation program), dusted over a lime and served alongside grilled prawns, and Haitian pikliz, a fuchsia-colored spicy cabbage pickle that’s used in a curing brine for mackerel and to punch up their version of a dirty martini.

Turin’s New Turn
TURIN MIGHT JUST BE ITALY’S LEAST FLASHY CITY. There are no obvious TikTok-driven attractions, and there’s no Colosseum, Uffizi Gallery, or St. Mark’s Square in Piedmont’s capital. Neither Gucci nor Ferrari was founded here; instead, it’s home to Fiat, Lavazza, and sportswear giant Kappa.
English Rose
YOU CAN TELL YOU’RE APPROACHING BRUTON, a small town in England’s Somerset county, by the color of the buildings. Two and a half hours southwest of central London by train, stone structures take on the glow of 160 million-year-old Jurassic Bath stone, and country manors the color of creamed honey dot the hills as haphazardly as do the cows.
Hungry for Houston
IS THERE ANYTHING SADDER than missing your first dinner in a new city because your plane was delayed? Well, yes, but I had been looking forward to starting at the South Asian emporium Aga’s like a mountaineer awaiting a blessing from the right kind of weather. And not because the Houston Chronicle had just named it the best restaurant in the city. “This is the only place in Houston I’d ever go for Pakistani cuisine,” a Pakistani acquaintance had insisted.

Coffee Country
CESAR CABALLERO’S EYES CRINKLE at the corners of his black-framed glasses as he stands in the shade of the well-placed banana trees that protect his coffee plants from Panama’s relentless sun. He picks up a pair of binoculars and focuses on a tree in the distance, certain he’s spotted something: one of his winged coworkers. “There are more than 200 species of birds at Finca Lérida,” he says, scanning the branches.
The New Era of Kitchen Faucets Is All About Style and Smart Tech

The Spirit of Scotland
MY DAD AND I SPENT YEARS dreaming about heading off to Scotland together to trace its distilling heritage. The promise was always the same, usually made over a glass of whiskey: one day. But rather than let that dream dissipate with the angel’s share, we finally clicked “book flight” on tickets. I wanted the itinerary for this long-anticipated trip to strike a balance between well-known names and new discoveries, places that would tell a fuller story of Scottish craftsmanship.
Hong Kong’s New Turn
IF YOU HAVEN’T BEEN to Hong Kong in a while, I can’t blame you—and I live here. Travel warnings were raised in 2019 during citywide protests, and before anyone could catch their breath, faces were covered, flights were canceled, and the once-24-hour city was shut down. That moment of forced introspection, when identities were rocked to the very core, was beyond difficult.
Austrian Escape
I WOULD NEVER HAVE PREDICTED that a 5-mile trek in shin-high snow, through the Spullerwald forest, over rivers and past ice-fringed firs, would be a highlight of my trip to the Austrian village of Lech.
Sink Spruce-Up
KITCHEN FAUCETS HAVE MORE OFTEN been regarded for their utility than their style. But lately, that’s changing, with brands debuting thoughtful designs that address the look, feel, finish, and functionality of the faucet, for hardware that’s both smart and stylish. BRIZO In partnership with the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, Brizo’s new kitchen collection has a decidedly organic feel.

The F&W 25: The Moments That Defined Food and Drink for the Past 25 Years
We’ve seen a lot of trends come and go since Food & Wine started in 1978. Some are delicious and persistent, such as the staying power of sriracha. Others were … less so. Remember when Olestra was a thing? Now, as we wrap up 2025, we asked our editors — experts in restaurants, wine, bars, and home cooking — to name the most significant ideas, moments, and movements of the century so far that have reshaped culinary culture.
From Magnolia Cupcakes to Caviar Bumps, These 25 Restaurant Dishes Defined the Past 25 Years Original
Credit: Food & Wine / Photo Illustration by Janet Maples / Getty Images Restaurant trends don’t just change the way we eat. They capture a moment in time. Over the past 25 years, our plates have mirrored pop culture, wellness movements, and their share of social media spectacle. In the early 2000s, Carrie Bradshaw turned Magnolia cupcakes into a must-have accessory, bacon went from breakfast plate to bourbon glass, and froyo shops had us weighing our desserts for impending sticker shock.
The Top 25 Kitchen Appliance and Gear Trends That Defined the Past 25 Years

The 25 tools and appliances listed here speak to the way we cooked, sipped, and snacked over the last quarter century. Some reflected health fads (hello, zoodles), while others spoke to a moment in history (looking at you, lockdown baking). Many have withstood the test of time on kitchen counters (long live SodaStream).

Portugal’s Hidden Paradise
“WE’LL TAKE THE ONE IN THE SUN,” I told the hostess in my best Portuguese, pointing to a corner table on the patio at A Azenha do Mar, a bustling cliffside tavern where there’s never a need for air-conditioning in the summer heat because a pleasant ocean breeze is always flowing. We took a seat, bathing in the late-day glow before our waitress reappeared, bringing with her glasses of crisp Sauvignon Blanc produced up the road at the Vicentino winery.
The Top 25 Kitchen Design Trends That Defined the Past 25 Years

The look, feel, and footprint of the family kitchen has evolved dramatically over the past 25 years. They reflect advances in technology and materials, as well as shifting lifestyles and aesthetics. Along the way, the kitchen evolved from a back-of-house workspace to the home’s center stage. In the early 2000s, walls came down and kitchens were integrated into open-plan living areas, the multitasking island acting as the command center.

Meet the 2025 Food & Wine Best New Chefs
|
This year, as the editors of F&W traveled the nation scouting restaurants in search of the 37th class of Food & Wine Best New Chefs, the word that kept coming up was “autobiographical.” At restaurants across the country, from Philadelphia to Phoenix and Oakland to Austin, stories were told on the plates, and menus read like memoirs. In this new generation, chefs and bakers are drawing from their backgrounds, their upbringing, and their hometowns as a source of inspiration.

The Magic of Monte Carlo
A PLUMP SCALLOP IS PLACED IN FRONT OF ME at the table, set in a puree of arugula, spinach, parsley, and okra and topped with verdant greens, evoking summertime on a plate. It’s so beautiful I feel a touch guilty digging into it, a feeling I quickly suppress as I marvel at the most tender scallop I’ve ever tasted. It’s one of many exquisite bites served on the tasting menu at Blue Bay Marcel Ravin, a Michelin two-star restaurant in Monte Carlo.

The Food & Wine Guide to Summer Entertaining Like a Pro Original
Growing up in Sydney, Australia, distinctly shaped my worldview on summer cooking and entertaining. A Southern Hemisphere summer meant eating a mango for breakfast while standing over the kitchen sink to catch the drips, a colorful array of salads and burnt snags (sausages) on weeknight rotation, buckets of chilled prawns and tinnies (cans) of cold lager for Christmas lunch on the back patio, and fish and chips rolled up in newspaper on the beach for Sunday dinner, no cutlery required.

Melbourne’s Next-Level Pastry Scene Is Reason Enough to Book a Flight to Australia Original
Photo: Nigel Killeen/Getty Images You could say that Melbourne has always been a pastry city. Jewish refugees paved the way with chocolate Kugelhopf, baked cheesecake, and plum cake when Pearl and Joseph Levine arrived by ship from Poland via Perth, opening the Monaco Cake Shop in the inner city suburb of Carlton in 1931.

Captains of Crunch
Whether you call it chicken-fried steak, katsu, or Milanese, crispy breaded cutlets are a globally beloved phenomenon. I come from a long line of Bavarians; we are a schnitzel people. This dish has been a staple at my table ever since I was a corduroy-overalls-clad toddler clinging to my mom’s leg as she dredged thin pieces of meat in flour, dipped them in beaten egg, coated them in breadcrumbs, and shallow-fried them in clarified butter in our tiny kitchen in the German Alps.
Fridges Freshen Up
THE WORKHORSE OF THE KITCHEN, a refrigerator rarely makes for an exciting topic—until you need to buy or sell one. Faced with the need to do the latter when my husband and I relocated from Australia to the U.S. a decade ago, we advertised our fridge online as the “Gateway to Narnia.” Our ad promised an interdimensional portal to conquer parallel universes, noting that if you climbed inside, you could truly feel the icy grip of the White Witch.
