Melissa Burgess is a Buffalo, NY native who has been covering hockey since 2011. She currently covers women's sports and intersectional feminist issues at The Victory Press; the Buffalo Sabres at Die By the Blade; and writes feature stories for Canisius College's men's hockey team. She also volunteers with the OJHL's Buffalo Jr. Sabres, providing unique content for a variety of social platforms, coordinating in-game video entertainment and tabulating online scoring.

Abstract While most gastrointestinal stromal tumors are driven by oncogenic mutations in KIT or PDGFRA, 10–15% exhibit functional loss of the succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) complex and genome-wide DNA hypermethylation. Excess methylation in SDH-deficient gastrointestinal stromal tumors disrupts genomic insulators, inducing aberrant expression of oncogenic ligands FGF3, FGF4, and activating an autocrine signaling loop mediated through FGFR1.

So, here we are. I started writing about men’s hockey in 2008 as part of my college newspaper. A few years later, I had my first opportunities to write about hockey – and largely, the Sabres – online. I spent five years under Fansided before finding my home here at DBTB in 2017. All told, that means I’ve been writing about the Sabres for about half of my life, which is… absolutely wild. I like numbers, so here are some numbers.
