I’m approaching 2 years as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC), and I want to reflect on a recurring question: “Why did you take this job, considering the College is struggling a bit?” I knew there were challenges, and the CFPC had not always connected with membership as it should. When I mentioned these questions to my wife, she said, “It makes sense to me why you took this job.” She’s right, of course.

My first camera was a half frame Leica with a fixed lens that I would take backpacking in the Sierra Nevada Mountains when I was in high school. I graduated to a Pentax K1000 and Kodachrome when my boys were old enough to backpack in Colorado with me, but when they were teens with a life of their own, the camera went into a drawer. Several years ago I picked up an all in one Sony and started backpacking again.

Difficult to helpful conversations

I’d like to talk about the value of difficult conversations. These are often thought of as important, even high-stakes, complex conversations with differing opinions. I find framing these conversations more as advice, feedback, and suggestions has helped me see them as opportunities to improve the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC). When members or collaborators take the time to share their concerns with us, it’s our best chance to understand issues and adapt.
