First, let’s go over what is happening now with the project.
In San Francisco, The Coffee Movement's New Location Is Brewing In Motion
Some cafes are never closed, open every day, rain or shine, global pandemic be damned. But on December 25th, 2022, The Coffee Movement—a specialty coffee bar in San Francisco, on the border of Nob Hill and Chinatown—shuttered its doors for the first time since opening in early 2019. This isn’t another 2023 closure story, thankfully.

Comparing crime rates between undocumented immigrants, legal immigrants, and native-born US citizens in Texas
Significance Despite its centrality to public and political discourse, we lack even basic information on fundamental questions regarding undocumented immigrants and crime. This stems largely from data constraints. Going beyond existing research, we utilize data from the Texas Department of Public Safety, which checks and records the immigration status of all arrestees throughout the state.

How Do Criminal Courts Respond in Times of Crisis? Evidence from 9/111
How courts make decisions during national emergencies has been a key focus of legal scholarship, yet we know comparatively little about how courts respond to national crises in one of their core functions—criminal sentencing. This article addresses this gap by leveraging the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, to examine the punishment of foreign nationals before and after a national emergency.

How coffee lovers can help coffee growers
As the most-consumed beverage in the world, and the second most traded global commodity after oil, coffee is economically important on an international scale. Its production and sale generated nearly $50 billion worldwide in 2015, and that number has only gone up. For coffee producing countries, which are primarily in the developing world, profits from coffee export can account for a significant percent of GDP.
Supporting displaced Colombians through the World Refugee Fund
For the past half-century, Colombia has been in the middle of armed conflict. Waged mostly in rural areas and the remote towns and villages that dot the country’s borders, the war between government forces and armed opposition groups—led by Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia, or FARC—has left thousands of fighters and civilians dead, and more than 7 million Colombian people displaced from their homes.

Just off the Gihembe refugee camp’s main street is the community’s first carpenter. His name is Lubingo, and he owns Gisanga Family Carpentry with his wife and sons. The family is well known inside and outside Gihembe for their excellent woodworking, and their work is found in many of the camp’s homes and businesses. But this wasn’t always the case, especially during their first years in Rwanda.
Scenes From The 2018 Cafe Imports Cultivar Caravan
What is it about the lure of the tour? Gassing up the van, hitting the road for a long haul, counting down the miles, making good time. It’s about the journey and the destination. We love a good tour here at Sprudge, and when there’s delicious coffee involved? Even better. Throughout the spring 2018 season, our longtime partners at Cafe Imports have been out on the road, crisscrossing the United States for a series of events dedicated to coffee.

A Visit To Counter Culture's New Seattle Training Center
Counter Culture Coffee’s Seattle Training Center is the sort of space you might stumble upon by chance. Located in a narrow storefront on 1st Street in the city’s Pioneer Square, its two-C logo affixed to the building’s facade just looks like it belongs. Has it always been here? It hasn’t, but Counter Culture’s Seattle “TC”, as it’s colloquially referred to, has been in the making since 2016.

Assil took out a $25,000 Kiva loan to invest in equipment and inventory for her first restaurant, Reem's California, which serves up Arab bread. It also acts as an anchor in the Fruitvale neighborhood, providing good jobs for those with barriers to employment, delicious nourishing food and a healthy dose of social justice.
Are coconuts the key to development along Colombia's coast?
Most of the population on the Colombian Caribbean coast lives in poverty, and 17% lives in extreme poverty. There's little formal employment in the region, and many families make less than $3 per day. Coconut farming is one of the few economic opportunities available to Colombians living along this coast, but with yields contingent on weather patterns, it’s a tenuous occupation.

On April 22, the international community celebrated Earth Day. To commemorate the holiday at Kiva, we published 2 stories about loan types that go to populations grappling with global climate change. The first story concerned agricultural loans, while the other tackled loans for clean water and sanitation projects. We weren’t the only ones to recognize Earth Day, however. This week’s Links We Like looks back at publications around the world who featured pictures and stories of the planet.
Bringing clean water to schools and communities through innovative finance
Access to clean water and sanitation have long been considered universal and basic human rights by much of the international community. In fact, the United Nations considers it a key part of its Sustainable Development Goals, a blueprint laid out in 2015 to mitigate the effects of human-caused climate change and improve the global populations’ overall quality of life by 2030. In developed countries, it can be easy to forget that about 1 in 10 people on Earth lack access to clean water.
Food security and hunger: Environmental issues on Earth Day and every day
Throughout much of the world, food security and hunger are, in large part, environmental issues. And they are intractably tied; ending hunger will demand the international development of sustainable food production systems, as well as widespread adoption of resilient agricultural practices by farmers and food producers in the developing world.

In a matter of days, Kiva lenders backed a $10,000 Kiva loan to one of the best restaurants in the United States at the beginning of April. Philadelphia's El Compadre, formerly South Philly Barbacoa, has received national attention for years for their slow-cooked lamb tacos, but a recent wave of press and attention following the restaurant’s feature in a Netflix documentary hosted by celebrity chef David Chang pushed their current location to its standing-room limit, necessitating an expansion.

Beyond Paris, Specialty Coffee Takes Hold Across France
In France, all roads (and train tracks, and flight paths) lead to Paris, metaphorically and physically speaking. It is a hub, a city that the French look to in admiration and sometimes even, in horror. It’s a crazy capital after all, similar to New York City in the way that it seduces and pulls people in, and can turn around and spit them back out. But often Paris takes the main stage, making us forget that there’s an entire country around it that deserves attention.
