Repeated heat pain threshold testing in pain-free individuals induces habituation and yields false-positive pre–post comparisons
Abstract Heat pain thresholds (HPTs) are used for clinical assessments, sensory phenotyping, and pre–post comparisons. This usage assumes that HPTs are stable, exchangeable, and unaffected by repetition. Twenty consecutive HPT measures were taken at each volar forearm during three daily sessions in pain-free individuals. Negative exponential growth models were used to characterise HPT series and estimate effects of session, side, and time between sessions.
Juries want fairness in court and don’t just obey the government. That’s why ministers are attacking them

When professional bodies set the standards
Professional education is continuing to shift. Increasingly, professional networks and bodies are developing their own standards and assessment frameworks for advanced practice, operating outside formal higher education institutions (HEIs) but designed to reflect postgraduate-level expectations. This change raises important questions about governance, quality assurance (QA) and the relationship between academic standards and professional self-regulation.
Identification and characterization of botulinum neurotoxin-like two-component toxins in Paeniclostridium ghonii
Abstract Insecticidal bacterial proteins play key roles in insect-bacteria interactions and have been used as biopesticides. Here, we identify two insecticidal proteins in Paeniclostridium ghonii, designated PG-toxin 1 (PG1) and PG-toxin 2 (PG2), which are homologs of botulinum neurotoxins (BoNTs). Unlike BoNTs, PG1 and PG2 contain two separate proteins: One is the protease light chain (LC), and the other is the heavy chain containing the translocation domain and the receptor binding domain.
Overcoming challenges in recruiting international students
Recruiting international students for Advanced Clinical Practice (ACP) MSc programmes in the UK faces several challenges, including financial constraints, visa requirements, cultural differences and limited awareness of career benefits. Despite these obstacles, evidence-based solutions can enhance global accessibility to these advanced qualifications. 1.

Robin Browne obituary
My friend Robin Browne, who has died aged 82, was a cinematographer specialising in aerial photography and special effects. His was not a name in lights, but he consistently excelled without the razzmatazz of Hollywood. I doubt there is anyone who has seen one of his films and not marvelled at the skills and dangers involved.
The association between conditioned pain modulation and psychological factors in people with chronic spinal pain: A systematic review
Introduction Chronic spinal pain, including chronic neck pain (CNP) and chronic low back pain (cLBP), is one of the main causes of disability worldwide.1 It results in a dramatic socioeconomic burden.1 In 2019, worldwide, 568 million people suffered from low back pain (LBP), 223 million with CNP.2,3 Although anatomical causes can be identified in people suffering from spinal pain, this only account for 5%–10% of individuals.4 Instead, it is widely accepted that spinal pain has...
Ancient Clostridium DNA and variants of tetanus neurotoxins associated with human archaeological remains - Nature Communications
Abstract The analysis of microbial genomes from human archaeological samples offers a historic snapshot of ancient pathogens and provides insights into the origins of modern infectious diseases. Here, we analyze metagenomic datasets from 38 human archaeological samples and identify bacterial genomic sequences related to modern-day Clostridium tetani, which produces the tetanus neurotoxin (TeNT) and causes the disease tetanus.

Changes to Business Travel Post-Coronavirus
By Michael L. Mansfield and Christina D. McConnell COVID-19 stay-at-home orders are being lifted and states are re-opening. However, uncertainty remains about the long-term impacts of COVID-19. How will businesses be impacted? How will travel change? As the United States re-opens and we hopefully move past the worst of COVID-19, businesses will have to assess their current and future operations and plan for a “new normal.” One important aspect of that “new normal” will be business travel.

Identification of a Botulinum Neurotoxin-like Toxin in a Commensal Strain of Enterococcus faecium
Botulinum neurotoxins (BoNTs), produced by various Clostridium strains, are a family of potent bacterial toxins and potential bioterrorism agents. Here we report that an Enterococcus faecium strain isolated from cow feces carries a BoNT-like toxin, designated BoNT/En. It cleaves both VAMP2 and SNAP-25, proteins that mediate synaptic vesicle exocytosis in neurons, at sites distinct from known BoNT cleavage sites on these two proteins. Comparative genomic analysis determines that the E.
Discovery of a proteolytic flagellin family in diverse bacterial phyla that assembles enzymatically active flagella
To explore novel functionality in bacterial flagellins, we gathered all 26,587 predicted flagellin sequences from the NCBI non-redundant database and examined them for novel domain architectures. Sixty-one different domains were identified within the flagellin hypervariable region, revealing tremendous domain diversity associated with surface-exposed structures on the flagellar filament (Fig. 1a). Bacterial flagellins are not known to possess enzymatic activity.
Blair escapes prosecution for the invasion of Iraq. What now for accountability?
The most senior judge in the UK has brought to an end the hope of prosecuting Tony Blair, Jack Straw and Peter Goldsmith for the crime of aggression in invading Iraq in 2003. The invasion and subsequent occupation resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians, the displacement of over four million others, and has left the country and region in a state of chronic instability. Yet the High Court has confirmed that there is to be no accountability.
Physical activity participation and the association with work‐related upper quadrant disorders (WRUQDs): A systematic review
Workers in various occupations often report work‐related upper quadrant disorders (WRUQDs). Research has shown that associative factors for WRUQDs include psychosocial and environmental elements, gender and physical activity levels. To date, no review has investigated whether physical activity participation is associated with and/or predicts the development of WRUQDs, so the present study set out to determine this.
