Introduction Cystic fibrosis (CF) pulmonary exacerbations are important clinical events for people with CF, that alter the natural course of lung disease. They directly contribute to deterioration of lung function and are associated with accelerated lung disease progression, reduced quality of life and increased mortality risk [1–3]. While broadly recognised as periods of worsening signs and symptoms of respiratory health, manifestations of pulmonary exacerbations are highly heterogeneous [4, 5].
