I once wrote a funny little picture book. It was a rollicking rhyme about Noah and the flood where Noah had lost his animals and was now looking for them in wacky places—like in a sock drawer or under a shoe. Charming, right? But later I found myself second-guessing that choice. After all, the flood wasn’t just a children’s tale, it was a cataclysm that wiped out nearly all life on earth. Would I ever write a lighthearted story about such devastation in any other context? Probably not.

What was your first job as a journalist?

Music reviews for a publishing industry magazine. (I liked getting free CDs!)

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yep. Pretended to be bad at typing to garner sympathy from a pretty girl in college. It worked! We ended up getting married later that year.

Why did you become a journalist?

I'm a pop culture nerd, so when I found out I could get paid for watching movies, going to shows, reading comics, and more, well, I was in!
